  • Christopher Wipper's mechanic wanted $169 just to troubleshoot a check engine light. AutoZone's free OBD2 scanner gave code P0458 (purge control valve circuit low), and the car wouldn't take fuel: it backed up in the fill tube. With no YouTube videos for the problem, Wipper used Grok to troubleshoot step by step: the air drain case on top of the fill port was clear, but the canister close valve's solenoid was stuck closed. Wipper had the replacement part in hand in 20 minutes and fixed it for $120 in less than an hour.

  • joenot443 was quoted $6k to fix their pool's plumbing and rebuilt it themselves over a few days with YouTube and GPT, for about $1k of materials. It was their first outdoor plumbing job and they'd never touched PVC. They say they wouldn't have had the confidence from YouTube alone: specific diagnostic help and a full diagram made the difference, and they had it prepare an SVG of the whole assembly with every measurement and part labelled.

  • Jassy's homestead relies on a commercial glass-door cooler for garden harvest, eggs and bacon mid-cure, but it had sat broken for 8 months because a repair call would cost $600 or more. Jassy described the symptoms to Claude: it cooled for 24–48 hours, then cut out while the fan kept running, with no icing. Claude came back with six things to check, saying which were reasonable DIY jobs. It suggested cleaning the coils. After that, Jassy reported that the fan ran and they could hear it calling for the condenser but the condenser did nothing. Claude was then fairly confident it was a bad start relay or overload protector, about $15 each. Jassy replaced both themselves, the cooler cooled almost immediately and had held steady for a month. Parts were about $30 with shipping.

  • Jassy's Whirlpool Duet washer had been run without the water turned on, and got stuck in a door-fault loop: pump running, door locked, lights flashing, and no way to reset it or turn it off. Local technicians charge a $300 minimum just to show up. The first couple of reset sequences Claude suggested didn't work, but Jassy kept describing what was happening and then shared a photo of the control panel. Claude then recommended holding the cancel button for a full 3 seconds (which, Jassy notes, is printed on the panel), and the washer reset and finished its cycle. The fix cost nothing.

  • Jeffrey Trull had two quotes for a driveway extension and retaining wall worth a few thousand dollars, from contractors they'd never used. One was $500 cheaper. They fed both into ChatGPT, which took 5 minutes. It flagged that the cheaper quote didn't mention drainage or backfill, and explained that water building up behind a retaining wall can make it fail; the dearer quote included a full drainage system with stone backfill. It also set out the trade-off between the nicer interlocking blocks and basic cement blocks, and wrote follow-up questions for each contractor, since one quote gave no wall dimensions and the other didn't explain ground prep. Trull planned to take those questions back to both contractors, and to ask the cheaper one to add drainage and backfill, before signing anything.

  • Shan Newton was hauling a heavy load up a mountain when a huge cloud of white smoke appeared behind the truck and fluid leaked down the road. Knowing nothing about fixing cars, Newton described what they saw to Grok 4 by voice; it said the white smoke pointed to the transmission and where to look, and the transmission oil cooler line had completely severed. After a passer-by towed the truck 18 miles into town, the new hose wouldn't fit inside the factory-crimped metal pipe. Grok suggested a hose with a bigger inner diameter to fit over the pipe, estimated the pressure at 10–20 PSI and said metal hose clamps would be enough. The workaround worked, and Newton says the truck runs better than before.

  • When the bottom section of their fridge warmed to about 11–14°C, the poster worked through a process of elimination with Grok, which pointed to the freezer fan and found the cheapest well-reviewed replacement (C$32.18 with taxes). The fan arrived the next day; the poster says it was indeed the problem and the fridge is working perfectly now.

  • The brake warning lights on the poster's car kept coming on. A mechanic claimed to have fixed it, the lights came back, and on a second visit the garage said it couldn't work it out without a fault code. At home, the poster noticed the brake fluid was low, confirmed it with ChatGPT from a photo, bought fluid and topped it up, and says that fixed it.

  • Turn every household manual into a searchable support desk with NotebookLMRecreated promptEvidence: Article or interviewPartial

XDA's Megan Ellis added PDF manuals for devices around the home (TV, air purifier, dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer, earphones and more) to NotebookLM, now called Gemini Notebook, mostly by pasting PDF links. Asked why dishes were still dirty after a wash cycle, it gave the answers Ellis had found in the manual in a few seconds, against 30 minutes spent searching the paper manual before. It couldn't say which of two headphone buttons was power, and its description of the dryer's heat exchanger still needed checking against the manual.

  • After their teenager let a Dell laptop's battery die, it stopped booting. The owner, who says they know nothing about IT, sent Grok a screenshot of each screen and asked what to do next. They worked through BIOS changes, Dell's recovery tools and repair commands, and finally booted from a Windows 11 installation USB, entered the BitLocker recovery key and got into recovery. The laptop now boots normally with all files intact. At the end, Grok wrote a summary of what was wrong, what was tried and what worked, which they posted.
