A prompt is the message you send to the AI tool. Copy the one on this page, put your own details where it asks, and read the answer before you act on it.

Recreated prompt

The source didn't share its exact prompt, so we wrote one from what it describes. The result shown is the source's, not ours.

What the prompt labels mean

The person didn't share their exact words, so we wrote this from what they described. We haven't tested it, and they didn't use this exact version.

Create a new Summary tab with a table grouping total spend by category and a line chart of spending by month. Then compare each category's monthly average against the budget tab and color-code what's over and under budget.

Try this in:

Sends the Recreated prompt shown above. ChatGPT and Grok open with it filled in, and ChatGPT may send it straight away. Gemini and Claude open empty, so we copy the prompt for you to paste. Every button also copies it.

The source used Claude. These are general chat tools, so results may differ.

Opens in a new tab. We don't see what you send.

Optional stronger version

Our rewrite with extra checks. The poster didn't test it.

Before you start, ask me 1–3 short questions about the details below and wait for my answers. Once I've answered, confirm the plan in one line and run the whole task start to finish.

Goal: Turn my spending sheet into a clear budget summary with charts, so I can see which categories run over.

Questions to ask me first:
- Which tabs hold the spending and the budget?
- Which months should I include?
- Do you want a dropdown to look at one category at a time?

Inputs (fill in or confirm):
- Spreadsheet: [FILE OR LINK]
- Spending tab and columns: [TAB NAME / DATE, CATEGORY, AMOUNT]
- Budget tab: [TAB NAME]
- Months to include: [RANGE]

Rules:
- Add new tabs only; never change the original data.
- Use formulas, not typed numbers, so totals update when I add rows.
- Color-code each category green if under budget and red if over.
- Name the categories driving any overspend.

Checkpoint: Show me the summary table before adding charts.

If you get stuck: If categories don't match between the two tabs, list the mismatches and ask before merging them.

Verify before you finish: Spot-check two category totals against the raw data and report the result.

Output: A Summary tab with totals by category, a monthly line chart, a budget comparison with colors and a one-paragraph summary.

Done when: I can see at a glance where I'm over budget, and the numbers check out.

Outcome

Haroun Adamu of Android Police tested Claude for Google Sheets on a sample household budget with two tabs: nine months of spending across 10 categories and a monthly budget for each category. Asked for a Summary tab, Claude built a table of total spending by category, sorted from highest to lowest, plus a line chart of spending by month. Asked to compare each category's monthly average with the budget, it color-coded categories green for under and red for over, added a bar chart and summarized the results: in the sample, spending ran $2,848.68 a month against a $2,830 budget, driven by gifts and groceries. It then added a dropdown to pick a category with a chart that updates to match. Through the Google Sheets connector in the Claude app, Adamu also built an interactive dashboard, which picked up new rows only after opening it in Claude or clicking refresh, not live.

Evidence: Described by posterThe person describes what happened in words, without screenshots or video.

Known limitations

PartialThe source says it only partly worked, or had a significant problem a person had to deal with.

What went wrong: The charts and color-coding worked, but the dashboard didn't update live; it needed a manual refresh to show new data.
