Decode a scary dental insurance denial and confirm the real bill with Claude Code
John Sambrook, 66, woke at 4:30 a.m. to an Aetna Explanation of Benefits for some dental fillings: six of the eight line items said DENIED, and the 'Your Share' column added up to $1,316. Sambrook had spent about 15 minutes setting up a small Claude Code workspace for personal insurance, with the policy documents in it, and asked it to explain the EOB. About three minutes later, it showed that the plan excludes 'comprehensive dental services', so the denials were expected, but that the dentist is in network and bills at a contracted rate. The actual amount owed was $723.83, the figure already being paid, so nothing more was due.

Emily Gransky had four planting areas to fill, a dog, often-visiting little kids and a wish list: flowers for butterflies and hummingbirds that also repel mosquitoes and bunnies, with color from spring to fall. Gransky put 85 phone photos of nursery plant tags in a folder Claude Code could open. It asked questions Gransky hadn't thought of, read the tags in every photo, priced each plant at Mahoney's in a spreadsheet with subtotals by bed and a grand total, drew a bed map by depth and bloom time, and made an HTML page of plant photos to use on a phone in the aisle.

Yadullah Abidi needed a replacement clip to hold a hydration bladder's 14mm drinking tube on a closed webbing loop measuring 57 x 24mm on a backpack strap. For MakeUseOf, Abidi gave Claude Code, Codex and Antigravity the same measurements and prompt, with each connected to FreeCAD to build, check and export the part. Codex made the cleanest model, but its T-head had no positive lock. Claude Code iterated and produced a clip that worked, but at 24 × 61.8 × 36 mm it was bulky and needs refinement. Antigravity needed three tries, once showing ASCII art, and its best design was closest to the intent but used wrong dimensions. Abidi printed all three; none was a clean win.

It takes four taps per food, and Fajardo says they can now see what's working.

Mads Lorentzen, a geophysicist by training, lost their position in late 2025 and built a Claude Code workflow to run the job search: profiling their own skills, scraping Danish job portals, evaluating fit, and drafting and reviewing each tailored application, plus interview prep. Lorentzen used it weekly and told every employer about it, which they say usually sparked a technical conversation rather than counting against them. Sixty-nine tailored applications, twenty first interviews and one signed contract later, Lorentzen started as an AI engineer in June 2026, and published the workflow as an open-source project.

Mahdi Farra had previously paid an appeal service a share of the saving to lower a rising property tax assessment. This year Farra gave Claude Code the address and new assessed value and asked for recent comparable sales around the January 1 lien date. It came back with three solid comps and a short case for a lower value, which Farra pasted into the county's informal decline-in-value form in about 10 minutes. Two months later the county accepted Farra's number to the dollar, cutting the assessment by almost 8%, about $1,200 a year off the bill.

Nikunj Kothari's daughter had just started kindergarten, and the daily meal was posted on a website with messy, unstructured data. Kothari asked Claude Code to find the site's API by looking at its network requests; it turned out to be unauthenticated, and Claude Code worked out the right format and handed it to the family's existing Hermes bot. Now their home bot tells them each morning what's for breakfast and lunch so they can pack food to match.

They say it summarised the findings, explained each estimate line, found the insurance policy in years of email, worked out the tests would be 90% covered after the deductible, spotted that the vet might support direct pay, and sent the vet an email asking, copying their wife.
