Get a $22,604 ER bill in collections waived after Claude helped find grounds to challenge it
Two years after an ER visit, Jackie Davalos got a collections notice saying $22,604 was owed to the hospital, having never received a bill; the records wrongly listed Davalos as uninsured. A first dispute only removed one medication charge. Davalos's partner, Walter Kerr, uploaded the billing and medical records to Claude and asked whether they had any further recourse. Claude suggested several arguments, including that legal requirements on debt and insurance might not have been met. Using many of them, Kerr wrote to executives at the hospital and its parent company, and shortly after the hospital waived the entire bill, later acknowledging a clerical error. A legal aid lawyer who reviewed it said some of Claude's analysis was right but it misunderstood some of the laws it cited.

Beckie Brown's household was on a fixed Octopus Energy tariff at 26.90p per kWh and wondered about switching to Agile, whose price changes every half hour. They downloaded 87 days of half-hourly smart meter readings, Octopus's published historical Agile prices for their region and their own tariff details, and asked Claude to work it out from the real data. In about 30 minutes Claude matched usage to prices, projected a full year from three years of Agile history, and produced an 8-page report: about £171 a year saved with no changes, around £218 with small habit shifts, a peak penalty of about £133 from 4 to 7 pm, and no exit fee. They switched. In a follow-up post on 12 May 2026, the first 30-day bill was just under £78, against about £120 for the same usage on the old tariff, in a record month for negative prices.

A Hacker News commenter had four home-repair bids with wildly different line items, costs, timelines, scopes and formats. Claude (Opus) turned them into an apples-to-apples comparison, filled gaps with reasonable inferences from the other bids, produced a PDF they printed to go through with their partner, and suggested key questions for follow-up calls. The commenter says it clearly showed the advantages of one of the bids.

After Robyn Agoston's mother died unexpectedly in April 2026, Agoston used Claude for the practical work: a list of who to notify (government offices, insurance, banks), resources to help the family with grief, a search for venues and vendors for the Celebration of Life, and keeping on top of to-dos by scheduling reminders and scanning email for open items. Agoston says it let them focus on family and friends, and notes that much of this could otherwise be handed to a funeral home at a cost.

With Claude connected to their Gmail, J. McLaughlin asked for a snapshot of the mailbox, then for the highest-volume promotional senders: years of store deals, grocery ads and app notifications. Claude pulled unsubscribe links and wrote Gmail search queries for each round of bulk deletion, which McLaughlin ran and confirmed in Gmail themselves. In one sitting they deleted more than 47,000 emails, over half the mailbox, and got the inbox down to five things that mattered.

The night Chad Newman's father died at home in hospice care in Florida, Newman typed something like 'my father just passed away. What do I need to do?' into Claude. Without being asked, it laid out a timeline for the first 48 hours, the first week and the first month. It flagged that a will has to be filed with the county court within ten days in Florida and covered notifying Social Security within a set window and contacting the VA. Newman printed the checklist and worked through it like a project plan.

Instead of calling a plumber, the poster used Gemini Live, which guided them through the job, said what to buy and what might be causing the clog; they cross-checked the advice with Claude Opus. In about 15 minutes the sink was fixed, and the poster says they now understand how it works.

How-To Geek's Dibakar Ghosh gave the same job posting and prompt to Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini, each told to ask them questions first; ChatGPT asked 30. They liked Gemini's look best, but the recruiter picked ChatGPT's: the only one-page resume, with no fabricated details, though they found it busy. They say the questionnaire step is what made it work and that AI resumes still need human oversight.

Hosting a family reunion for 55+ relatives from around the world, an organiser used Claude to clean a messy master roster, get vendor headcounts, send individual reminder emails, reconcile costs, produce individual schedules and roll-call sheets, and flag food allergies by meal. It also laid out the event program, cooler signs, mingling Bingo cards and colour-coded name tags on a specific Avery template. Earlier they'd used ChatGPT for the schedule, a local guide and newsletters.

Writing a month after accepting an offer from Amazon, a new hire says one of the things that helped was using ChatGPT and Claude for mock interviews: they fed both tools the job description and asked each to interview them like an Amazonian would, which surfaced questions they wouldn't have thought of. They also used AI to find gaps in their 15 prepared stories but wrote the stories in their own words.

Nine months after moving a family of four from Connecticut to near Madrid, Rebecca Cretella uses Claude to handle daily life in a new language. In a few weeks it helped troubleshoot a flashing freezer indicator on the fridge in under a minute, chat with a doctor through the family's insurance app when a son came home with a hematoma, translate bloodwork results, and understand an audit letter from Spain's tax authority about a package a neighbour had sent.

A TechRadar editor asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude what discounted tech to buy on Prime Day. Gemini focused on deals but overstated one: it said Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones were 50% off when they were actually 20% off at $198 (was $248). ChatGPT tailored picks to their interests from past chats but was less tuned in to actual discounts, and Claude, which knew least about them, gave fairly generic deals.

Two months after moving out, with no deposit back, a tenant in Kuala Lumpur gave Claude their lease, messages, move-out photos and repair receipts. They say it pointed to a 30-day return obligation, drafted a factual demand email citing the lease clauses, helped them challenge deductions (RM 1,750 claimed for floor damage versus an RM 250–400 market rate) and drafted a housing-board complaint. They recovered the full RM 2,400 in about 2 hours of work over three weeks.

Budgeting apps never stuck for Mahnoor Faisal, so they had Claude build a full Excel workbook (transactions, live dashboard, monthly budget, savings goals, recurring bills, net worth) and set up a Claude Project with the template and instructions. Now they type things like the date and 'bought matcha, spent on commute', and Claude categorizes each transaction, asks when unsure (café or store?), updates the spreadsheet and returns the file, from phone or laptop. Faisal says it has done more for their spending than any budgeting app.

XDA's Megan Ellis, a freelancer who files taxes three times a year, gave the same bank and credit-card exports and prompts to the free plans of Lumo, Gemini and Claude. Lumo missed a month of medication payments and about a third of the income. Gemini made no obvious errors and came within $100 of the manual income total. Claude hit its usage limit within two prompts at peak times but was the only one to match the manually filtered income total. Ellis still plans to do most of the taxes by hand.

For their soon-to-be seven-year-old twins' party, Clifford Parker gave ChatGPT and Claude the same brief and budget over four rounds. Claude asked three questions first and produced a Minecraft sports day with a run sheet, prep list and budget tracker; ChatGPT found a local venue and entertainer with a phone number and booking script; ChatGPT's image generator won on invitations; and Claude, connected to Parker's computer, updated the RSVP spreadsheet from a phone message. It finished 2–2, with ChatGPT winning the tiebreaker.

Before a call with their wife's neuroendocrinologist, a poster gave Claude their clinical context and asked for a structured appointment prep. They say it organised questions into three tiers (what changes next steps, understanding the mechanism, and forward-looking), each with a note on why they're asking, so they could triage if time ran short. They shared a reusable template and say the goal is to be prepared, not to replace the doctor.

When their thermostat rebooted every time the AC tried to start, a homeowner worked through it with Claude: checking thermostat wiring, then the air handler board and fuse, then isolating the cooling circuit, which pointed to the outdoor unit. There they found a contactor with degraded coil wiring, ordered a $15 replacement and swapped it in 20 minutes. They say the AC runs perfectly, versus a $150 minimum service call they expected to reach $300–400.

After a relative died following four hours of emergency care, Matt Rosenberg got the hospital's coded UB-04 form and asked Claude to compare each charge with what Medicare would pay. Claude spotted unbundled stent supplies worth over $100,000, a bypass charge for surgery that never happened, and ventilation billed alongside critical care, and estimated Medicare would have paid about $28,675. Rosenberg had ChatGPT check the analysis, spot-checked the rules, and sent a six-page letter. The hospital countered at $36,356 and they settled at roughly $32,500.

A TechRadar writer photographed their mother's 30-year-old handwritten apple pie recipe and asked Gemini and ChatGPT to turn it into a clear, cartoon-style infographic. Gemini's version was cute but full of misspellings and nonsense like 'Dash nutamon' and a cheese grater, and corrections didn't fix it; ChatGPT did marginally better but left out details. Claude gave the clearest, if plain, recreation. They called Gemini's first try unusable and kept their paper original.

A Tom's Guide writer asked five chatbots to plan a four-day family trip from near Minneapolis to the Black Hills and Badlands, with gas and food stops, meals, lodging and under 1,400 miles in a borrowed minivan. Gemini was best at routing; ChatGPT did worst, with a broken map link and a needless night in the Badlands; Copilot was minimal; Claude was good apart from the route. DeepSeek won by basing the family in Custer State Park and planning every meal, and they followed its plan exactly, calling it a blast.

A writer and their partner had ChatGPT and Claude each plan one day in Tunis, Tozeur and Hammamet, then built their trip from both. ChatGPT's plan was ambitious and cinematic; its Tozeur day 'nearly flattened' them with a far longer drive than implied, and a sandstorm blocked the road to the film sets. Claude's was slower and added two stops they loved, the Great Mosque of Kairouan and El Jem amphitheatre. They say ChatGPT delivered better memories and Claude more comfort and culture.

TechRadar's editor-at-large gave ChatGPT (GPT-5), Claude (Sonnet 4.5) and Google AI Mode (Gemini 2.5 Pro) the same Prime Day gift brief: five fun tech gifts under $100, smaller than a bread box, ideally heavily discounted. They found all followed the brief closely; Gemini answered fastest and returned the most varied list and the best breakdown, Claude pulled its picks from TechRadar's own guides, and ChatGPT leaned toward Amazon devices.
