Explain English bills and prescription labels to parents in plain Spanish with Claude
Joel Salinas's parents don't speak English well, but almost everything that matters to them, such as a bill, a doctor's note or a prescription label, arrives in English. Now they take a photo and Claude translates it and explains it in Spanish, in plain terms they can act on, so a prescription becomes 'take one in the morning, one at night, with food.' Salinas calls it the use that reframed the others and says to verify the dose or the due date yourself.

When John Bailey's mother's cancer came back, Bailey set up an AI assistant loaded with the mother's records and treatment history, using ChatGPT Projects and custom GPTs, to summarize test results and pathology reports in plain language. For big decisions, Bailey ran Deep Research in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini with a prompt that had the AI reason as an oncologist, a radiation specialist, a molecular pathologist, a clinical-trials expert and a patient advocate, which produced a detailed, source-cited report. On at least two occasions it surfaced details that were initially overlooked, including a finding in a radiology report. The AI didn't choose treatments; it helped the family ask better questions.

After a type 2 diabetes diagnosis, Edwin van Wijk had the Claude CLI build a categorized list of ingredients available in a standard Dutch supermarket, removed everything disliked (cheese included), then wrote goals and constraints in a CLAUDE.md file. Claude generated 30 varied recipes plus a table showing each one's main protein, carbohydrates and why it suits a diabetic. Each recipe van Wijk cooks gets printed for the recipe binder in the kitchen. Alongside exercising more and other diet changes, van Wijk reports losing almost 4 kg in four weeks and a glucose drop from around 15 to around 6 mmol/L.

After a routine specialist visit turned into a denied claim, Brett Chereskin had over $600 at stake. Chereskin pasted the policy sections and the explanation of benefits (EOB) into Claude for plain English, built a dated timeline of every call and letter, and got a read of the appeal steps and protections that might apply ('Not legal advice'). Claude helped draft the appeal. When the insurer's internal appeal stalled, Chereskin and Claude drafted a formal complaint to the state department of insurance in 'a focused hour'. The complaint is filed, but 'I don't know yet how it resolves.'

When Judith Miller, a 76-year-old Milwaukee resident, saw routine blood work posted online, Miller messaged the doctor to ask about an elevated carbon dioxide reading and a 'low anion gap'. While waiting for a reply, Miller put the results into Claude and asked it to evaluate them. 'Claude helped give me a clear understanding of the abnormalities,' Miller told NPR, and because it didn't report anything alarming, the wait for the doctor's answer wasn't an anxious one. NPR's article also covers what to keep in mind before sharing lab results with a chatbot.

Melissa Warr wanted to crochet a Valentine's dog from an image found online, but couldn't find a pattern for it and had never written one. Basic prompts for a pattern from a picture didn't work, so Warr had ChatGPT help write a better prompt. The patterns kept coming out as numbered lists instead of bullet points, with arms and legs that weren't long enough. Warr ran the prompt in both ChatGPT and Claude; Claude's results were better but 'missed many of the parts (the tail, ears, etc.)', and both struggled with irregular shapes. Warr gave up on the AI pattern and bought a pattern on Etsy instead.

Derek Croote wanted to replace a 2011 Subaru Forester with a hybrid SUV and asked Claude 3.5 Sonnet for a negotiation strategy. Claude pointed out that '10 vehicles available across 3 dealerships' was leverage, and suggested emailing each dealer for an out-the-door price, aiming for 3–5% below MSRP, settling the price before the trade-in, and buying near the end of the month. Croote emailed three dealers on a Wednesday night near month's end and negotiated for two days by email, text and phone. Croote says it saved over $4K on the out-the-door price, including $1,500 for the trade-in, more than expected.

Dan Taylor-Watt gave Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini the same brief, with deep research turned on, to research a paternal grandfather, Cecil, who died in 1960, starting from a Word document written by Taylor-Watt's father. Claude took about 6 minutes, used 340 sources and wrote an 11-page, 4,219-word report; it found no significant new information but flagged inaccurate dates, and it later made a 3-minute-30-second narrated video using code and an open-source voice model. ChatGPT took 9 minutes, ran 714 searches and wrote 14 pages (4,659 words); it caught an error about the year of the fire that destroyed service records, noted that the LNER railway wasn't created until 1923, found information on the first wife's family, and spotted a Lance-Corporal's chevron in a photo, but its video attempt fell short. Gemini wrote the longest and most visual report (5,347 words), but its maps were wrong (Osmotherley is east, not south, of Northallerton), it missed the date problems, and it said it couldn't make a video.

Adam Davidson gave Claude access to two Proxmox machines in a home lab and asked it to look for problems without changing anything. Writing for How-To Geek, Davidson says Claude found three overlooked problems. The backup job only covered services Davidson had picked by hand, so newly added services were being skipped; the fix was to back up everything by default and exclude what isn't needed. The ISP had changed the IPv6 prefix, so a few services still pointed at a Pi-hole IPv6 address that no longer existed, which was why a Jellyfin list plugin had been silently failing. And on the OptiPlex running Proxmox, the enterprise repository was off with no free repository turned on, so it was stuck on 9.1.1; it has since been updated.

nabossha's spouse had ordered a sketchy light-up gadget online. Claude helped nabossha gut it: the batteries and on/off switch came out, and USB-C power and an ESP32 went in. It's now hooked into Home Assistant and changes its light show when the doorbell rings, a parcel arrives or someone passes by, in time for Halloween. Reagan disconnected its wire on the main circuit board and disabled WiFi in the settings panel, and the fridge worked again. It still took a good bit of troubleshooting.

Cristian Măgherușan-Stanciu, a freelancer, had put off a 2025 German tax return for months. Using the Open Computer Use MCP connector, Claude browsed the bank site, downloaded every monthly ING DiBa statement PDF, wrote small scripts to pull the transactions into a CSV, sorted them by purpose (spotting cloud and software business expenses and asking about a few unclear ones), and filled in and submitted the SteuerGo form after a careful review. To check it, Măgherușan-Stanciu had Claude redo previous years: the numbers came within a few euros of what had been filed, the gap coming from monthly exchange rates Claude looked up. It took about 6h of conversation over a couple of days.

Casey Donaldson's furnace kept acting up. One HVAC technician charged $150 and gave a diagnosis that didn't fix it; a second charged $150 for a tune-up that didn't fix it either. Donaldson then described the symptoms over time to Claude, which narrowed the cause down to a few possibilities. $150 in parts later, the problem was fixed.

After a car crashed into one of Travis Biziorek's Detroit rental houses, the insurance payment got stuck: the public adjuster Biziorek had hired wanted about $5,000 more than their contract and held the check when Biziorek wouldn't sign off, and State Farm refused to reissue it to Biziorek alone. Claude advised filing a complaint with DIFS and walked Biziorek through it. Two days later State Farm emailed to say it had reissued the check, which arrived 10 days after that. Biziorek says the payment still doesn't cover repairs and lost rents.

Iliyana Stareva had three weeks to move a family of four from Spain back to the Netherlands. They opened a Claude project called "Move Back to the Netherlands", gave it their history, details about their kids and what was already sorted (they still had Dutch bank accounts and a phone number), and asked for a full plan covering housing, schools and childcare, moving both cars, taxes and municipality paperwork. In five minutes the plan surfaced a few things they had forgotten. Claude then built a tracker in Notion with owner, deadline and category for each task plus a "this week" view, and put key dates into Google Calendar, including a call to the municipality. Some items didn't apply and some deadlines moved once checked against their work calendar, so they spent ten more minutes adjusting it.
