  • Thy Toeung needed to review their car insurance before their son turned 16. They made a data sheet listing every driver, vehicle and the cover they wanted, and asked Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Muse to act as their insurance-shopping agent and get real quotes from six reputable insurers. Gemini's auto-browse explained it couldn't use the websites and handed back a comparison table to fill in. ChatGPT took 2 hours and 279 messages across 12 attempts and got no quotes; Toeung believes sites such as Allstate, Nationwide and Liberty Mutual block AI agents. Claude ran for 3.3 hours and got 5 real quotes. Muse, on its free tier, used several sub-agents and got 5 quotes in about 20 minutes. Toeung switched insurer and got about twice the cover for around 40% of the previous price.

  • Daniel Ross, a UK citizen travelling through Central America, was in Medellín when they realised they hadn't checked whether Honduras needed a visa. They searched in Chrome on their phone, and Google's Gemini answer said US, Canadian, UK and EU citizens don't need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days. They took its word for it. At the airport the agent asked for a visa, and the UK government's travel page showed one was needed, obtainable only at a Honduran embassy. Airline staff helped them rebook to end in Panama instead. The mistake cost $457, and Ross says they will stick to official sources for visa rules.

  • Financial planner Mike Palmer's itemised statement for a surgery was $3,802 in confusing codes and offsetting entries; insurance covered $1,390, leaving $2,412 out of pocket. Palmer saved the bill details as a PDF without personal information and asked Gemini what the codes meant and whether the coverage was correct. Gemini explained each line, confirmed the write-offs showed in-network pricing, and flagged an office consultation fee as likely contested, since insurers usually bundle a same-day evaluation into the procedure. There had been no separate consultation, so Palmer called the provider to dispute it, and they removed the $269 fee.

  • Kevin R. Kosar replaced a favourite pair of New Balance 880v11 running shoes with a similar-looking $100 Fresh Foam X 860v14, and two test runs left their lower back slightly sore. Kosar asked Gemini to compare the two. It explained that the new shoe is a little heavier and built for overpronators, while the 880v11 is a neutral shoe. Gemini then pointed to second-hand retailers, where Kosar bought two pairs of slightly used 880v11s; the new pair became around-the-house shoes.

  • Irena Palamani Xhurxhi asked Gemini to build a Google Form. It got partway, then stopped and asked Xhurxhi to take over because it couldn't change the question type in the interface. Xhurxhi gave the same task to Claude in the browser and went back to other work; when they returned, the form was done, with all five questions, correct types, descriptions and required fields. Asked about it, Claude said it had struggled with the same parts, trying clicks, JavaScript workarounds and keyboard navigation, but kept going rather than handing it back.

  • Zachary Thorman's skittish indoor cat, Puff, had slipped out 72 hours earlier without anyone noticing, with nights around 30°F. Thorman had Gemini go through days of Nest camera history. It found a pattern: Puff was coming back to check the door during quiet hours, around 7 AM and after 10 PM. Gemini suggested waiting rather than searching, laying a tuna-broth scent trail and leaving the door cracked; about an hour into waiting, Puff ran inside. Thorman then used Gemini to find local vet availability and book a check-up.

  • Jessica McKellar volunteers as chair of the parent advisory committee at their daughter's two-campus preschool. When the school changed food programmes and got a lot of parent feedback, it ran two weeks of classroom surveys tracked on paper. McKellar photographed the sheets and gave them to Gemini, which turned them into spreadsheets of raw data, analysed and summarised them in a management report for the administrative team, and drafted an email for the school to send parents explaining the results.

  • Daniel G. Taylor, who is single and wants to cook once for the week, had beef chunks near their use-by date, soft carrots, sprouting potatoes and half an onion. Taylor listed the ingredients for Gemini with the constraints: feed one person for multiple meals, use pantry staples and need minimal extra shopping. Gemini produced a beef and winter vegetable stew that cost under $12, will feed Taylor for five days and used up food that was heading for the bin.

  • Android Police writer Akshay Bhalla tends to forget where things are put away, which made the yearly deep clean drag. This year Bhalla used Gemini voice commands to save items to Find Hub's 'Remembered' section as they went: passport, tax documents, birth certificates, spare house and car keys, even a tape measure, each with a photo of where it was stored. Asking Gemini 'Where did I put my passport?' brings back the spot and the picture. The cleaning took two hours instead of a full day, though items have to be updated by hand when moved.

  • Carrie Liken asked Gemini to book a yearly eye appointment at their usual optician. It didn't work at first because the Zocdoc app needed switching on in settings and calling with '@zocdoc'. Once it was on, Gemini offered times for only one of the practice's doctors, not Liken's. Google's business listing showed the same single doctor, so Liken went to the practice website, found their doctor listed and booked there directly.
