Why this works & tips

Why this works

  • It tells the AI to use only the facts you give and to copy your plan name, email and dates exactly, so the message doesn't make up an account number, a price or a policy.
  • It asks for a plain "Please cancel", written confirmation and a short no to any discount offer, and rules out legal claims, threats and refund requests, so the message stays calm and clear.

Tips

  • The example answers are made up (Casey Ng, the PageTurn plan and the dates). Change them to yours in the boxes. The plan's last day and the renewal date have their own boxes and also go in "What I want", so use the same dates in both.
  • If you have no unused credits, take that question out of the email before you send it.
  • This prompt isn't for contracts with cancellation fees or notice periods, or for charges you're disputing. For those, check the company's terms or a consumer advice service.

Prompt

Written by us, last tested Oct 22, 2026. The words in [BRACKETS] are filled in by the form below, with our tested examples already in.

Write a message to cancel my subscription. Keep it short, clear and polite.

Rules:
- Use only the facts in my details. Copy the plan name, email and dates exactly. Don't invent an account number, a policy, a notice period, a price or a reason I didn't give.
- No legal claims or threats. Don't mention laws, rules, rights, being entitled to anything, regulators, consumer agencies, chargebacks, bank disputes or reviews.
- Don't ask for a refund. I'm not asking for one.
- Cancel plainly: "Please cancel", not "I'm thinking about cancelling". Don't leave room to keep the plan.
- Plain text.

Give me these 4 parts, in this order, with these headings:

1. Email: a subject line, then an email body of 80-150 words that starts with "Hello [company's support team]," and ends with my name and email. It must: cancel my plan so it ends on [last day of the plan] and doesn't renew on [date it would renew]; ask for written confirmation of the cancellation; and ask whether I can still use my [number of unused credits] unused credits before [last day of the plan].

2. Chat version: the same request in 50 words or fewer, for a support chat box.

3. If they offer a discount: a reply of 30 words or fewer that politely says no and repeats that I want to cancel.

4. Keep a record: 3-4 short things to save or check after I send it.

My details:
- My name: [your name]
- Account email: [account email]
- Service and plan: [service and plan]
- Billing: [when it renews and when it last renewed]
- What I want: [when the plan should end, and the renewal date to stop]
- Reason, if one is needed: [your reason, if one is needed]
- Unused credits: [number of unused credits]

Test results

Tested Oct 22, 2026 (version 1) on the free versions of ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok, 3 fresh chats each, using the example answers in the form above.

  • ChatGPT: Mostly works 2/3 One run's chat version was 51 words, 1 over the 50-word limit. Not wrong advice.
  • Claude: Mostly works 2/3 One run's email body was 77 words, under the 80 the prompt asks for. Not wrong advice.
  • Gemini: Mostly works 2/3 One run's chat version ended with an exclamation mark, which our tone check rules out. Not wrong advice.
  • Grok: Not tested yet Grok hasn't been tested on this version yet. We'll add its result once it is.

Works in 3 of 4 AIs (Consistent or Mostly works). No run gave wrong or harmful advice.

Before testing, we wrote down what a good answer must contain. A run passes only if it has all of it. Consistent means all 3 runs passed, Mostly works means 2 of 3, and Didn't pass means 0 or 1. We publish a prompt only if at least 3 of the 4 AIs are Consistent or Mostly works and no run gave wrong advice. We spot-check every prompt every 90 days, and if any AI fails a spot check, the prompt gets a full retest. Excerpts are copied word for word.
