WorkedEvidence: Described by posterPosted Last checked

Anurag Singh had Claude Code build a shared grocery list app with offline sync and reminders that the family uses every day.

How to use this

A prompt is the message you send to the AI tool. Copy the one on this page, put your own details where it asks, and read the answer before you act on it.

The source didn't share its exact prompt, so we wrote one from what it describes. The result shown is the source's, not ours.

What the prompt labels mean

The person didn't share their exact words, so we wrote this from what they described. We haven't tested it, and they didn't use this exact version.

Build an Android app where everyone in my family can add groceries to a shared list, specify quantities, add notes and mark items as purchased. Keep it free to run and limited to our family accounts.

Try this in:

Sends the Recreated prompt shown above. ChatGPT and Grok open with it filled in, and ChatGPT may send it straight away. Gemini and Claude open empty, so we copy the prompt for you to paste. Every button also copies it.

The source used Claude Code, which can take actions on your computer or in a browser. These are general chat tools, so results may differ, and a normal chat may only give you a plan.

Optional stronger version

Our rewrite with extra checks. The poster didn't test it.

Before you start, ask me 1–3 short questions about the details below and wait for my answers. Once I've answered, confirm the plan in one line and run the whole task start to finish.

Goal: Build a small Android app my family can share for a grocery list, with quantities, notes and my own reminders, at no running cost.

Questions to ask me first:
- How many people will use it, and do they all have Android phones and Google accounts?
- Which features matter most: quantities, notes, reminders, offline use?
- Do you want it free to run, with no server to maintain?

Inputs (fill in or confirm):
- Family members and their accounts: [LIST]
- Must-have features: [FOR EXAMPLE SHARED LIST, QUANTITIES, NOTES, REMINDERS, OFFLINE]
- Hosting: [FOR EXAMPLE FIREBASE FREE PLAN]
- Code repository: [GITHUB REPO]

Rules:
- Start with the smallest version: add, edit and check off items.
- Restrict access to the named family accounts only.
- Keep reminders on each phone instead of sending alerts to everyone.
- Stay within the free plan's limits and tell me if a feature would cost money.
- Commit each working step with a clear message.

Checkpoint: Show me the plan and data model before writing code, then a working build of the basic list before adding reminders.

If you get stuck: If a build fails twice, stop and explain the error instead of rewriting large parts of the app.

Verify before you finish: Test on two phones: add an item offline on one, then confirm it appears on the other after reconnecting.

Output: The app source in the repository, install steps and a short list of what's left out of this version.

Done when: Everyone in the family can sign in, share the list and set their own reminders.

Claude Code

Outcome

Anurag Singh of XDA Developers kept forgetting what to buy, so Singh asked Claude Code for an Android app where everyone in the family could add groceries to a shared list, set quantities and mark items as bought. Using Opus 5.5, Claude Code built it in Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, with Firebase for sign-in and Cloud Firestore to store the list and sync it across phones, including offline changes that sync once back online. Everyone signs in with a Google account, and access rules keep the list to the family. Items carry quantities and notes, so "rice" can include the pack size or brand. Singh added personal reminders scheduled on each phone rather than alerts to the whole family, and left remotely assigned reminders out of this version. Claude Code also committed its work to a private GitHub repository. The app runs on Firebase's free Spark plan and cost nothing beyond the existing Claude subscription, though Singh hit the five-hour usage limit twice while building it, and the family uses it every day.

Context: Only the opening brief is described, so the prompt here is recreated. Singh is a tech writer who uses Claude Code often, and a simple shared note app could cover some of the same needs.
