Turn a family meal plan into a Kroger cart with Claude Cowork

WorkedEvidence: Described by posterPosted Last checked

Patt S had Claude Cowork plan meals for three around allergies and fill a Kroger cart, after a first overbuilt setup plan.

How to use this

  1. Tap Copy prompt.
  2. Open the tool the case used (or a similar one) and paste the prompt; results may differ from the original.
  3. Paste it into the message box.
  4. Send it, then read the answer before acting on it.

A prompt is the message you send to the AI tool. Copy the one on this page, put your own details where it asks, and read the answer before you act on it.

Recreated prompt

The source didn't share its exact prompt, so we wrote one from what it describes. The result shown is the source's, not ours.

What the prompt labels mean

The person didn't share their exact words, so we wrote this from what they described. We haven't tested it, and they didn't use this exact version.

Here is my meal_preference.md file with my family's allergies, dislikes, cooking rules and past menus. Give me a meal plan for this week, then a shopping list worded for Kroger's product search. Before we plan how to connect this to Claude Cowork, research the most up-to-date MCP documentation and tell me how Cowork connects to local servers.

Try this in:

Sends the Recreated prompt shown above. ChatGPT and Grok open with it filled in, and ChatGPT may send it straight away. Gemini and Claude open empty, so we copy the prompt for you to paste. Every button also copies it.

The source used Claude Cowork and Claude in Chrome, which can take actions in a browser or app. These are general chat tools, so results may differ, and a normal chat may only give you a plan.

Optional stronger version

Our rewrite with extra checks. The poster didn't test it.

Before you start, ask me 1–3 short questions about the details below and wait for my answers. Once I've answered, confirm the plan in one line and run the whole task start to finish.

Goal: Turn my family preference file into a weekly meal plan and a store-ready shopping list, and plan the simplest way to send it to my grocery cart.

Questions to ask me first:
- Which grocery store and ordering method do you use?
- What allergies and hard rules must every meal follow?
- Have you already built any scripts or connectors, and which AI tool runs them?

Inputs (fill in or confirm):
- Preference file: [MEAL_PREFERENCE FILE]
- Store: [STORE]
- Days I cook and batch-prep: [SCHEDULE]
- Existing scripts or connectors: [TOOLS]

Rules:
- Follow every allergy and rule in the file; flag any meal that bends one.
- Word the shopping list the way the store's search expects, with sizes.
- Before suggesting how to connect tools, check the current official docs and cite them; prefer the simplest setup.
- Never ask me to paste passwords or API secrets into chat.

Checkpoint: Show me the week's plan and wait for swaps before writing the shopping list.

If you get stuck: If you're unsure how a tool currently works, say so and tell me what to check rather than designing around an old version.

Verify before you finish: Check each meal against the allergy list and each list item against the plan.

Output: A 7-day plan, a store-ready shopping list, and a short, sourced setup note if I asked about connecting tools.

Done when: I have a plan my family will eat and a list ready to send to the cart.

Outcome

Patt S cooks for three people with food allergies and changing tastes, and put every rule into one meal_preference.md file for Claude. The first plans needed corrections, so Patt turned them into reusable skills for meal planning, prep and shopping lists. Driving Kroger.com with Claude in Chrome worked but burned tokens on 50+ items, so Patt had Claude build a Kroger API integration and then a small local MCP server. Asked only "I want this to work in Claude Cowork," Claude laid out two elaborate paths that would have been days of work and were unnecessary; the real fix was one config edit. Now the plan goes straight to the Kroger cart in about 10 minutes a week.

Context: This build needs Kroger API access and some Python. The Kroger cart API only adds items; it can't change quantities or remove them. The research-first line is the prompt Patt says should have been used.
