I am tracking my grocery spending for a family of five. I want to understand what I am buying repeatedly, what items may belong in household instead of groceries, and what I should check at home before I shop again. Here is my list.

Before you start, ask me 1–3 short questions about the details below and wait for my answers. Once I've answered, confirm the plan in one line and run the whole task start to finish. Goal: Review my grocery tracker to catch entry mistakes, misfiled non-food items and things I'm rebuying too soon. Questions to ask me first: - How many people are you shopping for, and any special needs or diets? - What period does the tracker cover? - Which categories do you use besides groceries? Inputs (fill in or confirm): - My grocery tracker or list (date, store, item, quantity, price): [TRACKER] - Household size and needs: [HOUSEHOLD] - My categories: [e.g., GROCERIES / HOUSEHOLD / PERSONAL CARE] - What's already at home, if I know: [PANTRY NOTES] Rules: - Flag entries that look wrong: dates outside the period, odd quantities or prices that don't match the rest. - Move non-food items into household, personal care or another category, and show the new grocery total. - List items bought more than once and say whether it looks like a real staple or rebuying too soon. - Don't tell me what my family should eat; I make the final choices. Checkpoint: Show me the flagged mistakes first so I can check them against my receipts before you change any totals. If you get stuck: If you can't tell which category something belongs in, ask me rather than guessing. Verify before you finish: Check that the category totals add up to the original receipt total. Output: A list of possible mistakes, a corrected category breakdown and a short list of repeat buys to check at home. Done when: My tracker is corrected and I know what to check at home before the next shop.

Outcome
Joyce Zahariadis tracks grocery spending in a simple spreadsheet for a family of five, in which three children have special needs. In June, Zahariadis tested ChatGPT both while shopping and while keeping the tracker. In the store, the questions were what could wait, what to check for at home first and what looked like a repeat purchase. While tracking, the questions were about totals that looked off. ChatGPT helped catch wrong dates, wrong quantities and category mistakes, and it separated non-food items such as household and personal care from the grocery total, which had made spending look higher than it was. It also flagged staples being rebought too soon, such as peanut butter already bought in bulk. Zahariadis made every final decision and does not report a dollar amount saved.
