The source didn't share its exact prompt, so we wrote one from what it describes. The result shown is the source's, not ours.

What the prompt labels mean

The person didn't share their exact words, so we wrote this from what they described. We haven't tested it, and they didn't use this exact version.

Here are the things in my kitchen: [LIST, E.G. PASTA, TOMATOES, WHITE BEANS, PLAIN GREEK YOGURT, SPINACH, SPICES]. What can I make tonight using mostly what I already have? Keep the steps short and simple, and tell me the oven temperature or pan to use.

Optional stronger version

Our rewrite with extra checks. The poster didn't test it.

Before you start, ask me 1–3 short questions about the details below and wait for my answers. Once I've answered, confirm the plan in one line and run the whole task start to finish.

Goal: Make dinner from what I already have, with short, simple steps.

Questions to ask me first:
- What's in your fridge, freezer and cupboards right now?
- How many people are eating, and any foods to avoid?
- What cooking equipment do you like to use?

Inputs (fill in or confirm):
- Ingredients on hand: [LIST]
- People and diet: [NUMBER, ALLERGIES OR DISLIKES]
- Equipment: [SKILLET, SAUCEPAN, OVEN]
- Items on sale this week: [OPTIONAL LIST]

Rules:
- Use mostly what's on hand; list at most three things to buy.
- Write the steps in short, plain sentences, one action per line.
- Use ingredients that are going off first.
- No exotic equipment.

Checkpoint: Give me three meal ideas in one line each before writing out the one I choose.

If you get stuck: If a key ingredient is missing, offer a swap from my list instead of sending me shopping.

Verify before you finish: Every ingredient in the recipe is on my list or in the short buy list.

Output: Three ideas, then one recipe with an ingredient list and numbered steps.

Done when: I can cook tonight without a trip to the store.

Outcome

After a stroke left Laura Malis with aphasia, recipe directions became hard to follow, so in November 2025 Malis started telling ChatGPT what was in the kitchen and asking what to make. It suggested meals from food already on hand, such as a creamy tomato, white bean and spinach pasta from pasta, tomatoes, white beans, Greek yogurt and spinach, and Malis didn't need complicated directions to cook them. Less food got thrown away, and Malis began cooking Asian, Mediterranean and African-inspired dishes with spices bought years earlier. Combined with Malis's husband Keith buying groceries on sale at three stores, the couple have averaged $163.51 a week on groceries since June 2026, and they estimate their food costs are about 18.5% lower than six months earlier.
