Negotiate internet and phone bills down by $113.99 a month with ChatGPT call scripts
Allison, a 34-year-old paralegal paying about $612 a month across bills, tested ChatGPT bill negotiation for 30 days with Jake Read. For each call, ChatGPT wrote a 60-second script plus three fallback lines. Spectrum dropped the internet bill from $94.99 to $59.99 a month for 12 months, and AT&T moved two lines from $165 to $110 a month after a second call to the retention department. Geico didn't budge, and ChatGPT's estimate that the car insurance could drop to $140 a month was too optimistic. A gym credited three free months and an unused Disney+ was canceled. Total savings: $113.99 a month, or $1,367.88 a year, for 2 hours and 41 minutes of calls.

Therese M., a retiree who isn't a financial professional, uses ChatGPT between appointments with a financial planner, not instead of them. Therese asks it to 'explain these concepts to me like I'm in fifth grade'. Before meetings with an accountant or certified financial planner, Therese says what the meeting should achieve and asks ChatGPT for targeted questions. When Therese was thinking about redoing a bathroom, ChatGPT ran the numbers and the pros and cons, and Therese decided to just fix the leaky faucet. One firm rule: no real account numbers, Social Security number or identifying details go into the chat.

Myra Donohue, 28, an HR administrator in Grass Valley, California, had US$5,000 of credit card debt plus car payments and other bills, and a partner who had just been laid off. A Facebook post about fixing your finances in seven steps said to start with a zero-based budget, where every dollar gets a job. Donohue plugged the household numbers into ChatGPT and asked for a personalized plan instead of paying for one. 'It was really about me getting back on the horse,' Donohue said. The same New York Times report warns that AI money advice can be wrong, and advisers say to double-check it.

Realtor and content creator Jennifer Allan asked ChatGPT every day for one task to make money toward $23,000 of credit card debt. Over a month, Allan says, the challenge brought in over $11,000 and paid off $12,078.93. Some ideas were quirky: Allan wrote '$23,000' on a watermelon as 'debt art' and auctioned a photo of it for $51. Others paid off: an idea to search phone apps for forgotten money turned up $100.80 on Venmo, and Allan's husband remembered a brokerage account holding $10,200. Credit counselor Noelle Carter warns that AI can help with ideas but is no substitute for human expertise.

Dave Schools tried personal assistant apps to see if they were worth the hype. Schools says Hark cancelled 5 subscriptions, saving $872 a year plus a $22 refund, and paused a lawn care service ($1,163 so far this year). With access to Schools' Rocket Money account, Hark answered questions about spending at Amazon or particular stores and pointed out more ways to save. Muse, a second assistant, researched restaurants and booked an OpenTable reservation for a date night. Schools puts the total saved across both at $2,182, from a few minutes of chatting.

AJ Stuyvenberg, an engineer at Datadog, was offered faster fiber internet by Comcast for $50 a month and asked ChatGPT to negotiate with Verizon. After a little over an hour in Verizon's live chat, the agent got the plan down to $69.99 a month from $94.99, plus a $47.50 loyalty credit, which Stuyvenberg said saves $347.50 over a year.

Shane Mac, CEO of XMTP Labs, set up a 'CFO' agent in Grok Bot with read-only access to personal checking and savings accounts, to send a monthly report of balances, expenses, recurring costs and anything suspicious, only to Mac, in a group chat of agents Mac had named 'My Personal Exec Team'. Weekly runs worked, but on Thursday, October 1, the first monthly audit went to a company Slack channel called 'Exec-team' instead, because the agents shared the Slack connection and the two channels had the same name. XMTP's head of product flagged it; it showed Mac's balances, biggest expenses and spending over target on a barn being built. Mac deleted the post and disconnected Google, calendars, banking and Stripe. The Grok team found the agent had confused the destination and shipped a fix requiring explicit permission before agents move information to other channels.

Cristian Măgherușan-Stanciu, a freelancer, had put off a 2025 German tax return for months. Using the Open Computer Use MCP connector, Claude browsed the bank site, downloaded every monthly ING DiBa statement PDF, wrote small scripts to pull the transactions into a CSV, sorted them by purpose (spotting cloud and software business expenses and asking about a few unclear ones), and filled in and submitted the SteuerGo form after a careful review. To check it, Măgherușan-Stanciu had Claude redo previous years: the numbers came within a few euros of what had been filed, the gap coming from monthly exchange rates Claude looked up. It took about 6h of conversation over a couple of days.

Mahdi Farra had previously paid an appeal service a share of the saving to lower a rising property tax assessment. This year Farra gave Claude Code the address and new assessed value and asked for recent comparable sales around the January 1 lien date. It came back with three solid comps and a short case for a lower value, which Farra pasted into the county's informal decline-in-value form in about 10 minutes. Two months later the county accepted Farra's number to the dollar, cutting the assessment by almost 8%, about $1,200 a year off the bill.

When Andrew Wilkinson's New York building emailed a 9% rent increase at lease renewal, Wilkinson asked ChatGPT to pull current listings for comparable units in the building and within 5 blocks, with asking rents, time on the market and concessions, then draft a polite reply backed by those comps. It returned a table and a draft. Wilkinson checked the listings personally, fixed a few things and sent it. The increase came down to 1.2%.

Mr Jasper's spouse needed a Tax ID, and the agent they contacted quoted 10k and asked for the spouse's NIN to process it the next day. Mr Jasper asked ChatGPT about it and how long it takes, and found it was something they could do themselves in a few minutes. They opened the official portal with the spouse's NIN and the Tax ID was ready in less than one minute, saving the 10k fee.

John Helmuth asked both ChatGPT Work and Grok Bot how much time was left on their Ford Explorer loan with Ford Credit. Both first searched email for a statement, found none and went to the Ford Credit site, then got stuck at the login. ChatGPT's secure form didn't work and its cloud browser never showed a keyboard; Grok Bot handed over its cloud browser with a working keyboard, but after Helmuth entered their email and password it stayed stuck on the sign-in screen. After 5 minutes on both, Helmuth logged in on their phone's browser with a passkey and saw the loan terms in about 30 seconds.

Natasha Hsi got five homeowner's insurance quotes for a complicated house. They differed on exclusions, wind and named-storm deductibles, and admitted versus surplus-lines insurers, and Hsi found them hard to follow. They fed all five plus their current renewal into ChatGPT and Claude and ran scenarios such as a hurricane loss and a total loss. When Hsi suggested starting with BBB ratings, both pushed back: BBB tracks complaints, while financial strength ratings show whether an insurer can pay after a storm. Hsi took the questions back to their original agent, who returned a better-structured quote at a more reasonable cost with none of the weakly rated insurers.

Wes Pomeroy's town assessment had nearly doubled since they bought the house eight or nine years earlier, and they realised the last day to challenge it was that day. Using Claude Cowork connected to Gmail, Google Drive and Chrome, they first asked about the official rules and deadline, which turned up that a mailed form wouldn't count: it had to be handed in in person by 9 PM. Claude found an old broker appraisal, the assessor's email about a renovation and the addition's square footage, and cut a weak argument about crime risk that had no data behind it. It filled the official form, drafted a cover letter, built a comparison page and a labelled photo exhibit and merged them into one file. Pomeroy says the first pass was about 65% right and corrected it several times. Both owners signed and the packet was stamped at the assessor's office before the deadline. The post doesn't give a result yet.

The Verge's Jay Peters asked Gemini Spark to draft an email to their spouse with the couple's average monthly grocery spending in 2026, without naming the spouse or saying where the budget was; the spreadsheet in Drive doesn't have 'budget' in its name. Spark found the spouse's email address, pulled the monthly grocery totals from the right 2026 spreadsheet (including May's incomplete data), averaged them and put a draft in Gmail that used the spouse's first name and a sign-off the couple use. Jay's reaction: 'Wow, that's actually nuts.' Their wider verdict was that Spark still needs checking and isn't worth the $99.99-a-month plan on its own.

Beckie Brown's household was on a fixed Octopus Energy tariff at 26.90p per kWh and wondered about switching to Agile, whose price changes every half hour. They downloaded 87 days of half-hourly smart meter readings, Octopus's published historical Agile prices for their region and their own tariff details, and asked Claude to work it out from the real data. In about 30 minutes Claude matched usage to prices, projected a full year from three years of Agile history, and produced an 8-page report: about £171 a year saved with no changes, around £218 with small habit shifts, a peak penalty of about £133 from 4 to 7 pm, and no exit fee. They switched. In a follow-up post on 12 May 2026, the first 30-day bill was just under £78, against about £120 for the same usage on the old tariff, in a record month for negative prices.

Anthony Garcia's taxes had got complicated enough that Garcia hired an accountant, who was still a month and a half away from giving the full picture. Garcia copied all the tax files, some electronic PDFs and some scans of paper copies, into one folder, pointed Claude Cowork at it and asked for an estimate of the 2025 taxes due. Claude read all of them. In 30 minutes it produced a summary table of tax liability, amount withheld and balance due, with a thorough breakdown that referred to boxes on the tax forms.

Finance writer Jessie Hewitson tested ChatGPT on household bills. An emailed tariff review with Octopus turned into a phone call that moved them to tariffs worth an estimated £626 a year. Not everything worked: a ChatGPT-written appeal against a £90 Transport for London penalty failed, and a home-insurance quote it led to came in at £1,627.24 against £436 before.
