Plan a family trip to Paris and London with ChatGPT after a dozen prompts

PartialEvidence: Described by posterPosted Last checked

Follow-up prompts made ChatGPT lose the thread on a Paris and London plan, but one detailed prompt gave a good partial start.

What the prompt labels mean

These are the person's own words, as shared in the source.

Act as my expert travel agent and help me create an itinerary for my upcoming trip to Paris and London with my family (which includes two 7-year-old girls). I want you to suggest family-friendly and must-see attractions in Paris and London. Include time stamps for each activity, cost, and other tips I should know about. Remember, you're my expert travel agent, so give me the best tips you can. Count the day I arrive as day 1 of my trip. I’d like to go to Disneyland Paris on day 3 of my trip and plan on staying until close. Include a train ride from Paris to London in the late morning on day 4. Include prices where relevant.
I arrive on [Date], at 9:05 a.m. and depart from London on [Date], at 3:10 p.m. Include some activities on the day I depart.

Optional stronger version

Our rewrite with extra checks. The poster didn't test it.

Before you start, ask me 1–3 short questions about the details below and wait for my answers. Once I've answered, confirm the plan in one line and run the whole task start to finish.

Goal: A day-by-day family itinerary for Paris and London that I can check and book from.

Questions to ask me first:
- What are your exact arrival and departure dates and times?
- How old are the kids, and what pace suits them?
- Which fixed plans do you already have, like a Disneyland day?

Inputs (fill in or confirm):
- Arrival: [CITY, DATE, TIME]
- Departure: [CITY, DATE, TIME]
- Travelers: [ADULTS, KIDS' AGES]
- Fixed plans: [E.G. DISNEYLAND PARIS ON DAY 3, TRAIN TO LONDON ON DAY 4]

Rules:
- Count the arrival day as day 1.
- Mark every price and opening time as an estimate for me to check.
- Keep travel between sights realistic for young kids.
- Put everything in one updated itinerary each time I ask for a change.

Checkpoint: Show a one-line plan per day before filling in the times.

If you get stuck: If a change breaks the plan, say what has to move instead of quietly dropping it.

Verify before you finish: Each day's times add up without overlaps, and the train fits the day-4 morning.

Output: A day-by-day table with times, costs, tips and a list of things to confirm.

Done when: I have one itinerary I can check, book and actually use.

Outcome

Chris Tuttle had flights into Paris and out of London with 8 days in between for a family trip, and asked ChatGPT to act as a travel guide. The first plan was a trip, but not this family's trip, and after a string of follow-up requests (train times, swapping Venice for Holland, then dropping Amsterdam) ChatGPT lost the thread and still hadn't produced a usable itinerary. Seeing its suggestions did help the family decide to stick to Paris and London for a no-rush trip. Tuttle then wrote one detailed prompt, and the reply was a plan with suggested times, costs and most of the sights they would end up seeing. It had taken about a dozen prompts to get there, and Tuttle still planned to check the prices, times and any missing must-sees on Google.

Evidence: Described by posterThe person describes what happened in words, without screenshots or video.

Known limitations

PartialThe source says it only partly worked, or had a significant problem a person had to deal with.

What went wrong: The step-by-step follow-ups lost the thread; one detailed prompt finally gave a good starting plan, with prices and times still to check.
