Plan a ferry-free Hong Kong island-hopping day with ChatGPT

PartialEvidence: Article or interviewPosted Last checked

ChatGPT's first Hong Kong island plans were wrong, including a bus to a ferry-only island, before pushback got a working route.

How to use this

  1. Tap Copy prompt.
  2. Open ChatGPT.
  3. Paste it into the message box.

What the prompt labels mean

These are the person's own words, as shared in the source.

I’d like to visit at least three different islands in Hong Kong in one day. However, I’m not good on boats and get seasick easily, so I’d like an itinerary that doesn’t include ferries.

Before you start, ask me 1–3 short questions about the details below and wait for my answers. Once I've answered, confirm the plan in one line and run the whole task start to finish.

Goal: Plan a one-day route that visits several islands using only ground transport, with no boats.

Questions to ask me first:
- Which city or region, and which day of the week?
- Where are you starting from, and by what time must you be back?
- What do you enjoy: food, sights, walking, shopping?

Inputs (fill in or confirm):
- City or region: [CITY]
- Start point and return time: [START / RETURN TIME]
- Interests and budget: [INTERESTS / BUDGET]

Rules:
- Count only separate islands, not neighborhoods of the same island.
- For every leg, name the exact transport (train line, bus number or bridge) and confirm it doesn't need a boat.
- If a place can only be reached by ferry, leave it out and say so.
- Say when something needs checking, like opening hours or bus routes, and don't guess.
- Order the stops so the route flows without doubling back too much.

Checkpoint: Before the full itinerary, list the islands you picked and how each one connects by land, and wait for my OK.

If you get stuck: If you can't find enough islands reachable without boats, tell me instead of stretching the rules.

Verify before you finish: Re-check every leg for boats and every stop for being a separate island.

Output: A timed itinerary with transport for each leg, one food stop and a backup option.

Done when: I have a day plan that really works with no ferries.

Outcome

CNN Travel's Lilit Marcus, who gets seasick, asked the free ChatGPT website, used without signing in, for a one-day plan to visit at least three Hong Kong islands without ferries. The first few rounds were pretty bad: it suggested Chek Lap Kok, the man-made island that is just the airport, then two neighborhoods on Lantau Island as if they were separate islands, then a bus to Lamma Island, which is only reachable by ferry. After more pushback, it suggested Lantau, Tsing Yi and Hong Kong Island, all reachable without boats. Hits included the Tian Tan Buddha, lunch at the Po Lin Monastery canteen and a route that flowed naturally on one subway line. The Tsing Yi stop was anticlimactic, which Marcus says was partly due to the strict rules.

Known limitations

PartialThe source says it only partly worked, or had a significant problem a person had to deal with.

What went wrong: It took several rounds of pushback: ChatGPT first counted the airport island and neighborhoods as islands and suggested a bus to a ferry-only island.
