Before you start, ask me 1–3 short questions about the details below and wait for my answers. Once I've answered, confirm the plan in one line and run the whole task start to finish. Goal: Leave a $150/month QuickBooks bill for a local Beancount ledger plus a Claude Code invoicer. Questions to ask me first: - What ledger format and account names do you already use? - What fields must every invoice include? - Where should PDF invoices and.beancount entries be saved? Inputs (fill in or confirm): - Client and amount: [NAME / $] - Beancount file: [PATH] - Invoice template preferences: [NOTES] Rules: - Keep double-entry balanced. - Don't upload the full ledger to a cloud model if I ask for local-only edits. - Show the ledger diff before writing. - Remind me this is not tax advice. Checkpoint: Show a sample PDF and the matching Beancount lines for my OK. If you get stuck: If account names are unclear, ask me to pick from the open chart of accounts. Verify before you finish: Sum the new postings to zero and open the PDF once before go-live. Output: Working invoice command, PDF sample and ledger snippet. Done when: I can invoice a client without opening QuickBooks.

Generate an invoice for Jones Enterprises for $300 for AI consulting. Produce a clean PDF and write the corresponding double-entry into my Beancount ledger.

Outcome
John Sambrook had been paying Intuit about $150 a month ($1,800 a year) for QuickBooks Online. Sambrook moved the books to open-source Beancount plain-text accounting, then asked Claude Code to generate an invoice for Jones Enterprises for $300 of AI consulting. About twenty minutes later Sambrook had a working invoicing tool that makes PDF invoices and writes matching Beancount ledger entries. Sambrook frames it as one example in a broader pattern of canceling SaaS and rebuilding with AI coding agents, including preparing S-Corp tax filings.
