Before you start, ask me 1–3 short questions about the details below and wait for my answers. Once I've answered, confirm the plan in one line and run the whole task start to finish. Goal: Find and fix what's wrong with my dishwasher before I pay to replace it. Questions to ask me first: - What's the brand and model number? - What exactly happens, and which error codes or lights show? - Are you comfortable with basic tools and turning off water and power? Inputs (fill in or confirm): - Brand and model number: [MODEL] - Error codes and symptoms: [CODES / SYMPTOMS] - What I've already tried: [TRIED] - Price of a replacement I'm considering: [NEW PRICE] Rules: - Start with free checks (filters, drain hose, clogs) before suggesting parts. - Before each step, remind me to turn off power and water. - For each part, give the likely cost and how to confirm it's faulty before buying it. - If I keep reporting the same result, suggest a different cause instead of repeating the same step. Checkpoint: After each step, wait for me to report what I found before giving the next one. If you get stuck: If a step needs special tools or looks unsafe for me, say so and suggest calling a repair technician. Verify before you finish: Check each suggestion against the meaning of my error codes in the manufacturer's manual. Output: A numbered troubleshooting list, a running parts cost and a clear 'repair or replace' point. Done when: The dishwasher runs a full cycle with no error codes, or I know it's time to replace it.

Outcome
Over the holidays, Keith Maly's dishwasher stopped finishing its wash cycle and showed error codes E24, E25 and a water tap warning. Rather than spend $700–$1,300 on a new machine, and with Google results not much help, Maly used ChatGPT to work through diagnostics and troubleshooting. Working through it with ChatGPT, Maly cleaned and replaced the inlet filter, flushed the drain line, replaced the inlet valve and turbidity sensor and then replaced the drain pump, which finally revealed a piece of plastic lodged in the sump. The repair cost $150 in parts and about ten hours over two and a half weeks. Maly also credits a repair site's how-to videos and says asking ChatGPT hypothetical questions helped when it kept repeating the same answers.

Fix a washer that leaves soap on clothes by cleaning the drain filter with ChatGPT
Mohan Natarajan's Samsung front-load washer, almost 10 years old and out of warranty, started leaving foam on the clothes and not draining. A service visit would probably have cost at least ₹1,000. ChatGPT listed likely causes and walked Natarajan through opening the drain filter, warning that water might spill out and not to force anything out unless it was clearly foreign. The filter was full of 'dirt, lint, sand, and hair'. After cleaning it, 'The machine worked perfectly.' Natarajan adds a limit: no AI help for repairing electrical systems.

At Anyron Copeman's parents' home, which they had moved into only four months earlier, only some lights were working, and then all the power went off. There was no local power cut or sign of a blown fuse, and an emergency Sunday call-out could cost hundreds of pounds. Copeman sent Gemini a photo of the consumer unit (fuse box), and within seconds it gave a simple step-by-step way to find and fix the problem. In the end a bulb replacement and adjusting some switches did the trick. Gemini didn't provide that exact fix; the family found it by chance while trying another of its suggestions. Without Gemini, Copeman says, they probably wouldn't have tried to fix it themselves.

Emily Gransky had four planting areas to fill, a dog, often-visiting little kids and a wish list: flowers for butterflies and hummingbirds that also repel mosquitoes and bunnies, with color from spring to fall. Gransky put 85 phone photos of nursery plant tags in a folder Claude Code could open. It asked questions Gransky hadn't thought of, read the tags in every photo, priced each plant at Mahoney's in a spreadsheet with subtotals by bed and a grand total, drew a bed map by depth and bloom time, and made an HTML page of plant photos to use on a phone in the aisle.

When a tenant reported that the washing machine at a rental property wasn't spinning, self-described not-handy landlord Sam Guertler asked ChatGPT. It laid out a few possible causes and a step-by-step checklist in one response. Following it, and sending photos and observations along the way, Guertler found the suspension rods needed replacing. ChatGPT gave links for replacement parts and how-to videos; Guertler ordered the parts, replaced them and used ChatGPT to check the work. The tenant later texted that the washer was 'purring like a kitten'. A traditional search, tried for comparison, led to a fix that wasn't the issue.

Kaylie L. Fox, who is blind, pointed a phone at a thermostat in Gemini Live's video mode and asked for help lowering the temperature. Gemini Live said it was set to 78 degrees and to press the down arrow on the right; after Fox pressed it, Gemini read the new setting: 74. 'Within seconds, we were much cooler.' Two weeks later, at a friend's house, Fox spent two frustrating hours on an unfamiliar dryer while Gemini confidently gave incorrect instructions twice, and Fox gave up. Fox now double-checks AI answers.

Michaela Holmström bid on a house in Finland built in 1956, and the largest banks hesitated over its original condition. A first, modest plan got a discouraging response. A banker advised raising the budget and describing the workload and materials in great detail, a plan that would normally take Holmström over a week. Holmström uploaded the inspection report to ChatGPT for a summary, gave it the floor plan, materials and room sizes, and had it work out liters of paint from wall area and lengths of water pipe. Holmström cross-checked prices with real merchants and split costs into materials and labor. It still took several hours of Holmström's own work, and not every AI detail was flawless. A loan specialist at a major Nordic bank said it was the most thorough renovation plan the specialist had ever reviewed.

Decide to go back to the ER for worsening leg pain and breathlessness with ChatGPT
Julian Millikan's leg pain had already been seen once in the ER and once at urgent care, where it was diagnosed as a gout flare, and the MRI that was ordered was declined by insurance. When Julian became nauseated and too short of breath to manage two steps on crutches, Julian's wife, Shauna O'Brien, typed the symptoms and earlier diagnoses into ChatGPT. It told O'Brien to 'go back to the ER immediately,' warning the pattern could mean deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or a joint infection. Paramedics found an elevated heart rate and low blood oxygen, Julian was fast-tracked at triage, and scans showed a large DVT and bilateral pulmonary emboli. Doctors said Julian likely would not have survived another night at home. During the four-day stay, ChatGPT also helped O'Brien understand treatment choices and prepare questions for discharge.

McKenzie Day dreaded calling service providers, so Day asked ChatGPT for a strategy for each bill, how to reach a real person fast and a script for negotiating, including what to say if the first offer wasn't good enough. Taking one bill a week, Day got home internet down from $109 to $50 a month (with more data, Peacock streaming and the rate locked for 5 years), switched phone providers to go from $48 to $15 a month for the first year ($30 after that), moved pest control to a DIY approach ($48 to $11 a month) and swapped a budgeting app for a self-hosted Actual Budget ($9 to $3 a month). In about a month that came to $119.75 a month, or $1,437 a year.

Allison, a 34-year-old paralegal paying about $612 a month across bills, tested ChatGPT bill negotiation for 30 days with Jake Read. For each call, ChatGPT wrote a 60-second script plus three fallback lines. Spectrum dropped the internet bill from $94.99 to $59.99 a month for 12 months, and AT&T moved two lines from $165 to $110 a month after a second call to the retention department. Geico didn't budge, and ChatGPT's estimate that the car insurance could drop to $140 a month was too optimistic. A gym credited three free months and an unused Disney+ was canceled. Total savings: $113.99 a month, or $1,367.88 a year, for 2 hours and 41 minutes of calls.
