Before you start, ask me 1–3 short questions about the details below and wait for my answers. Once I've answered, confirm the plan in one line and run the whole task start to finish. Goal: Lower one of my monthly bills by getting a better deal from the provider or switching. Questions to ask me first: - Which bill is it, who is the provider, and what do you pay now? - What does the plan include, and how long have you been a customer? - Are you willing to switch providers or change how you get the service? Inputs (fill in or confirm): - Bill and provider: [BILL / PROVIDER] - Current monthly cost and what's included: [COST / PLAN] - How long I've been a customer: [TENURE] - Competitor offers I know about: [OFFERS] Rules: - Tell me the fastest way to reach a real person who can change my price, such as the retention or cancellations department. - Write a short, polite phone script with an opening ask, a fallback if the first offer is too small and a clear point where I say I'll switch. - Suggest cheaper alternatives, including switching or doing part of it myself, with rough monthly costs. - Don't invent current prices or promotions; tell me what to check on the provider's site. Checkpoint: Show me the script and the alternatives, then wait while I make the call before suggesting next steps. If you get stuck: If the provider won't budge, help me compare switching costs, contract terms and any cancellation fees. Verify before you finish: Check the new monthly and yearly savings against what I pay now, including any price that rises after a first-year deal. Output: A phone script, a short list of alternatives with costs and a one-line summary of monthly and yearly savings. Done when: I've either got a lower price confirmed or a clear plan to switch.

Outcome
McKenzie Day dreaded calling service providers, so Day asked ChatGPT for a strategy for each bill, how to reach a real person fast and a script for negotiating, including what to say if the first offer wasn't good enough. Taking one bill a week, Day got home internet down from $109 to $50 a month (with more data, Peacock streaming and the rate locked for 5 years), switched phone providers to go from $48 to $15 a month for the first year ($30 after that), moved pest control to a DIY approach ($48 to $11 a month) and swapped a budgeting app for a self-hosted Actual Budget ($9 to $3 a month). In about a month that came to $119.75 a month, or $1,437 a year.

Context: Some savings came from switching or doing it yourself rather than negotiating, and the new phone plan rises to $30 a month after the first year.

Negotiate internet and phone bills down by $113.99 a month with ChatGPT call scripts
Allison, a 34-year-old paralegal paying about $612 a month across bills, tested ChatGPT bill negotiation for 30 days with Jake Read. For each call, ChatGPT wrote a 60-second script plus three fallback lines. Spectrum dropped the internet bill from $94.99 to $59.99 a month for 12 months, and AT&T moved two lines from $165 to $110 a month after a second call to the retention department. Geico didn't budge, and ChatGPT's estimate that the car insurance could drop to $140 a month was too optimistic. A gym credited three free months and an unused Disney+ was canceled. Total savings: $113.99 a month, or $1,367.88 a year, for 2 hours and 41 minutes of calls.

Therese M., a retiree who isn't a financial professional, uses ChatGPT between appointments with a financial planner, not instead of them. Therese asks it to 'explain these concepts to me like I'm in fifth grade'. Before meetings with an accountant or certified financial planner, Therese says what the meeting should achieve and asks ChatGPT for targeted questions. When Therese was thinking about redoing a bathroom, ChatGPT ran the numbers and the pros and cons, and Therese decided to just fix the leaky faucet. One firm rule: no real account numbers, Social Security number or identifying details go into the chat.

Myra Donohue, 28, an HR administrator in Grass Valley, California, had US$5,000 of credit card debt plus car payments and other bills, and a partner who had just been laid off. A Facebook post about fixing your finances in seven steps said to start with a zero-based budget, where every dollar gets a job. Donohue plugged the household numbers into ChatGPT and asked for a personalized plan instead of paying for one. 'It was really about me getting back on the horse,' Donohue said. The same New York Times report warns that AI money advice can be wrong, and advisers say to double-check it.

Realtor and content creator Jennifer Allan asked ChatGPT every day for one task to make money toward $23,000 of credit card debt. Over a month, Allan says, the challenge brought in over $11,000 and paid off $12,078.93. Some ideas were quirky: Allan wrote '$23,000' on a watermelon as 'debt art' and auctioned a photo of it for $51. Others paid off: an idea to search phone apps for forgotten money turned up $100.80 on Venmo, and Allan's husband remembered a brokerage account holding $10,200. Credit counselor Noelle Carter warns that AI can help with ideas but is no substitute for human expertise.

Dave Schools tried personal assistant apps to see if they were worth the hype. Schools says Hark cancelled 5 subscriptions, saving $872 a year plus a $22 refund, and paused a lawn care service ($1,163 so far this year). With access to Schools' Rocket Money account, Hark answered questions about spending at Amazon or particular stores and pointed out more ways to save. Muse, a second assistant, researched restaurants and booked an OpenTable reservation for a date night. Schools puts the total saved across both at $2,182, from a few minutes of chatting.

AJ Stuyvenberg, an engineer at Datadog, was offered faster fiber internet by Comcast for $50 a month and asked ChatGPT to negotiate with Verizon. After a little over an hour in Verizon's live chat, the agent got the plan down to $69.99 a month from $94.99, plus a $47.50 loyalty credit, which Stuyvenberg said saves $347.50 over a year.

Decide to go back to the ER for worsening leg pain and breathlessness with ChatGPT
Julian Millikan's leg pain had already been seen once in the ER and once at urgent care, where it was diagnosed as a gout flare, and the MRI that was ordered was declined by insurance. When Julian became nauseated and too short of breath to manage two steps on crutches, Julian's wife, Shauna O'Brien, typed the symptoms and earlier diagnoses into ChatGPT. It told O'Brien to 'go back to the ER immediately,' warning the pattern could mean deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or a joint infection. Paramedics found an elevated heart rate and low blood oxygen, Julian was fast-tracked at triage, and scans showed a large DVT and bilateral pulmonary emboli. Doctors said Julian likely would not have survived another night at home. During the four-day stay, ChatGPT also helped O'Brien understand treatment choices and prepare questions for discharge.

Kevin and Ruth's vehicle, Igor, was losing power in a tiny town in Veracruz, Mexico, and the pollution air pump had started making odd whirring noises. Kevin input the vehicle statistics and symptoms into ChatGPT, which gave three possibilities: a clogged catalytic converter, the fuel pump or the MAP sensor. The fuel pressure read 40 psi and a swapped MAP sensor changed nothing, which left the converter. ChatGPT suggested removing the oxygen sensor in front of the converter so the exhaust could escape; the engine fired right up and ran normally. The mechanics hollowed out the converter instead of replacing it, the check engine light stayed on, and the bill was 1,700 pesos (about $98 US).
