Strip junk clips from family travel videos with a tool built using Claude Code

WorkedEvidence: Described by posterPosted Last checked

Claude Code helped Rommel Sunga build a tool that strips junk clips from family videos and exports a timeline to DaVinci Resolve.

How to use this

  1. Tap Copy prompt.
  2. Open the tool the case used (or a similar one) and paste the prompt; results may differ from the original.
  3. Paste it into the message box.
  4. Send it, then read the answer before acting on it.
New to this? What's a prompt?

A prompt is the message you send to the AI tool. Copy the one on this page, put your own details where it asks, and read the answer before you act on it.

Prompt

Recreated prompt

The source didn't share its exact prompt, so we wrote one from what it describes. The result shown is the source's, not ours.

What the prompt labels mean

The person didn't share their exact words, so we wrote this from what they described. We haven't tested it, and they didn't use this exact version.

Help me build a Python tool that goes through a folder of family travel clips, detects the junk sections where the camera was left running or sat in a bag using brightness, detail and motion rather than audio, and exports the rest as a full-quality timeline in the original order that I can open in DaVinci Resolve.

Try this in:

Sends the Recreated prompt shown above. ChatGPT and Grok open with it filled in, and ChatGPT may send it straight away. Gemini and Claude open empty, so we copy the prompt for you to paste. Every button also copies it.

The source used Claude Code, which can take actions on your computer or in a browser. These are general chat tools, so results may differ, and a normal chat may only give you a plan.

Opens in a new tab. We don't see what you send.

Optional stronger version

Our rewrite with extra checks. The poster didn't test it.

Before you start, ask me 1–3 short questions about the details below and wait for my answers. Once I've answered, confirm the plan in one line and run the whole task start to finish.

Goal: Cut the junk out of hours of family video automatically while keeping everything worth watching.

Questions to ask me first:
- Which camera and file format do you shoot?
- Which editor should the timeline open in?
- What counts as junk in your footage?

Inputs (fill in or confirm):
- Footage folder: [PATH]
- Camera and format: [E.G. DJI POCKET 3, MP4]
- Editor: [E.G. DAVINCI RESOLVE]
- Junk examples: [CAMERA IN BAG, POINTING AT THE GROUND]

Rules:
- Never delete or overwrite the original files.
- Keep clips in their original order.
- Add a short padding around each cut so nothing is clipped too tightly.
- Export to the editor so I can review every cut.

Checkpoint: Run it on one short clip first and list the sections it would remove.

If you get stuck: If a section is borderline, keep it and mark it for review.

Verify before you finish: The exported timeline opens in the editor and its length matches the kept sections.

Output: A script, a short how-to and an editor timeline with each cut marked.

Done when: I can watch a trip's footage without sitting through the dead time.

Outcome

Rommel Sunga shoots family travel videos on a DJI Pocket 3 and often leaves the camera running while helping a crying child or carrying luggage, so a one-week trip to Japan produced something like four hours of unedited footage. Editing by hand in Premiere was so time-consuming that Sunga often skipped it. Audio-based tools such as auto-editor didn't suit clips with little dialogue, so Sunga built a tool with Claude Code that detects junk visually, using brightness, detail and motion measured against each clip's own range, then exports a full-quality timeline in order to DaVinci Resolve. It removes the moments when the camera was left on or sitting in a backpack, and Sunga released it on GitHub as winnow. Sunga expects others may still need manual edits, but says it solved many pain points and gave the weekend back.

Evidence: Described by posterThe person describes what happened in words, without screenshots or video.
