Try Claude in Chrome on an ASDA grocery shop and watch it add bonus carrots

PartialEvidence: Described by posterPosted Last checked

Christina Souch's Claude in Chrome ASDA run partly filled a 40-item sheet but added wrong Regulars, stalled and tossed in bonus carrots.

How to use this

  1. Tap Copy prompt.
  2. Open the tool the case used (or a similar one) and paste the prompt; results may differ from the original.
  3. Paste it into the message box.
  4. Send it, then read the answer before acting on it.
New to this? What's a prompt?

A prompt is the message you send to the AI tool. Copy the one on this page, put your own details where it asks, and read the answer before you act on it.

The source didn't share its exact prompt, so we wrote one from what it describes. The result shown is the source's, not ours.

What the prompt labels mean

The person didn't share their exact words, so we wrote this from what they described. We haven't tested it, and they didn't use this exact version.

Automate my weekly ASDA shop from this Google Sheet of product names, quantities and weekly vs monthly tags. Prefer the spreadsheet as the source of truth. You may use Regulars to find items faster, but only add what is on the list. Do not check out — leave the basket for me to review.

Sends the Recreated prompt shown above. ChatGPT and Grok open with it filled in, and ChatGPT may send it straight away. Gemini and Claude open empty, so we copy the prompt for you to paste. Every button also copies it.

The source used Claude in Chrome and Claude, which can take actions in a browser or app. These are general chat tools, so results may differ, and a normal chat may only give you a plan.

Optional stronger version

Our rewrite with extra checks. The poster didn't test it.

Before you start, ask me 1–3 short questions about the details below and wait for my answers. Once I've answered, confirm the plan in one line and run the whole task start to finish.

Goal: Fill an online grocery basket from a spreadsheet without wrong Regulars or bonus items.

Questions to ask me first:
- Which store and sheet tabs hold the product list?
- What offer or price rules apply?
- Confirm checkout stays manual.

Inputs (fill in or confirm):
- Spreadsheet: [LINK / FILE]
- Store account: [ASDA / OTHER]
- Hard rules: [NO CHECKOUT / ONLY LISTED ITEMS]

Rules:
- Spreadsheet is the only source of truth.
- Regulars may speed search, never override the list.
- Stop and ask if an item is ambiguous.
- Never click checkout.

Checkpoint: Add the first three correct items and show the basket total before continuing.

If you get stuck: If the agent calls the task tedious or invents stockouts, pause and have me confirm the next five SKUs.

Verify before you finish: Diff the basket against the spreadsheet before I pay.

Output: A reviewable basket plus a short log of skips and extras.

Done when: Every listed staple is in the basket or explicitly marked missing by me.

Outcome

Christina Souch asked Claude in Chrome (Haiku) to fill an ASDA basket from a Claude-built Google Sheet of 40-plus items with offer logic. Across five attempts the agent took a Regulars shortcut and loaded about £200 of wrong old favorites, called the task "quite tedious" after one correct item, hit token limits around £42.80, lost a run when the window closed, claimed in-stock items were unavailable, declared success after 24 of 42 items (£71.76), then added carrots that were not on the spreadsheet. Souch's verdict: sort of, partially, not really — still useful to review, finish and remove the carrots, but not trustworthy autonomous checkout.

Evidence: Described by posterThe person describes what happened in words, without screenshots or video.

Known limitations

PartialThe source says it only partly worked, or had a significant problem a person had to deal with.

What went wrong: Claude in Chrome partly filled the basket but added wrong Regulars, stalled, hit limits, invented out-of-stock excuses and bonus carrots.
