Win hotel and airline refunds after a medical trip cancellation with ChatGPT
A Reddit user had to cancel a trip to Medellín, Colombia, at the last minute because of a sudden medical emergency, and the hotel and airline both refused refunds. The traveler told ChatGPT about a generalized anxiety disorder diagnosis backed by a doctor's note, and it read the policies of the airline, the hotel and Expedia and drafted a refund letter. The hotel agreed to a refund. The airline said it only refunded 'due to death or terminal illness', so ChatGPT wrote a second letter on how the condition affected flying, and an hour after it was sent, the airline changed its mind. The traveler says ChatGPT saved about $2,500.

Denis Shiryaev's Alaska Airlines flight was delayed, putting the connection to Amsterdam at risk. While Shiryaev was on the plane, a ChatGPT Dot chatted with Alaska, Delta and KLM at the same time, found a new route and, after Shiryaev approved it, got the rebooking done for free, saving a night in Seattle.

Paul Hudson woke to find an early train to London cancelled; the later train would have made Hudson late for an event, and the earlier alternative left in 20 minutes. Hudson's ChatGPT Dot had already spotted the problem on its own: it read the cancellation email to confirm the ticket was valid on earlier trains, then checked live tracking and found the earlier train was running late and hadn't left its starting station. Hudson left more or less as normal and caught that train. Hudson was testing Dots early through OpenAI's Dev Early Access Community.

Max Weinbach got a little sick in Hawaii after an 8 1/2 hour flight delay and couldn't face flying to San Francisco for OpenAI's Dev Day. Weinbach had a ChatGPT Dot try to cancel the non-refundable hotel and flight and get refunds. It emailed the hotel, which didn't reply; after 2 days it emailed the general manager, who approved cancellation with no fee. When a $210 charge then appeared on the card, it followed up to ask why. It also sent Delta a request citing the 8.5 hour delay and asking for an exception, and Delta called to say it would approve a full refund.

Sravan Vadigepalli booked a family trip in January, cancelled it in May and forgot about it. Months later Vadigepalli asked Muse to look into it. It found idle airline credits, a partial refund, and an insurance policy bundled into the booking that Vadigepalli didn't remember buying, then filed the claim. The insurer approved $1,445.52.

Michelle got home 24 hours late after a snowstorm delayed a connection in Dallas: a night with friends, another full day at the airport, and a rerouted flight to a city about two hours from home. A Chase Sapphire Reserve card turned out to include trip delay insurance, but the claim wanted receipts and Michelle had none. Michelle told ChatGPT exactly what happened; it said the claim was worth a try, helped write a letter explaining everything, said to include the boarding pass and flight details, and showed where to submit it. A week later the claim was approved for $500, the maximum benefit, and the check arrived.

Gizmodo's Webb Wright had some badly delayed flights that forced them to pay for Lyft rides home in the early hours, and asked Muse to request refunds. Given screenshots of the receipts and the flight details, Muse drafted decent emails, courteous but firm. But buried inside one draft was the important point that the airlines didn't take refund requests by email, so the drafts would have to be pasted into the airlines' websites. Webb ended up opening a browser and entering the details by hand, though they did use the message Muse had drafted.

Manuel Dominguez's suitcase never left Canada on a WestJet trip to Mexico City and Puerto Vallarta, and it took 10 days to get it back. When the case moved from one WestJet person to another, they asked Claude to pull the full history of emails with the first person so they could pass it on. To claim expenses, they photographed the receipts for clothes bought during those 10 days and asked Claude to build an Excel sheet from them to attach to the claim. It saved a lot of time, but WestJet paid only 60% of the original claim.

After an Airbnb stay with no hot water and a host-required third-party app that didn't work, a guest explained the problem to ChatGPT by voice and uploaded a video. Instead of drafting an email, ChatGPT opened its cloud browser, had the guest log in to Airbnb, found the stay, opened a support ticket, asked for a human, made the case and uploaded screenshots from the video; the guest only stepped in to approve messages. A representative called and the guest got $250 back.
