Plan a last-minute Las Vegas weekend with ChatGPT

PartialEvidence: Described by posterPosted Last checked

Ben Smithson had ChatGPT plan Las Vegas; the hotel advice helped, but it missed a 60,000-person festival and a diner detour.

How to use this

  1. Tap Copy prompt.
  2. Open ChatGPT.
  3. Paste it into the message box.

A prompt is the message you send to the AI tool. Copy the one on this page, put your own details where it asks, and read the answer before you act on it.

Recreated prompt

The source didn't share its exact prompt, so we wrote one from what it describes. The result shown is the source's, not ours.

What the prompt labels mean

The person didn't share their exact words, so we wrote this from what they described. We haven't tested it, and they didn't use this exact version.

I'm going to Las Vegas for the first time for three nights. Here are my dates, interests, food budget and the tickets I've already booked, including a show and a rental car for a day trip to Valley of Fire. Plan my itinerary, compare two hotels for me and suggest how to get around.

Try this in:

Sends the Recreated prompt shown above. ChatGPT and Grok open with it filled in, and ChatGPT may send it straight away. Gemini and Claude open empty, so we copy the prompt for you to paste. Every button also copies it.

Opens in a new tab. We don't see what you send.

Optional stronger version

Our rewrite with extra checks. The poster didn't test it.

Before you start, ask me 1–3 short questions about the details below and wait for my answers. Once I've answered, confirm the plan in one line and run the whole task start to finish.

Goal: Plan a short city trip around my booked tickets, with realistic travel times and local events that could get in the way.

Questions to ask me first:
- What are your dates, and what's already booked?
- What's your budget for food and getting around?
- Do you prefer walking when it's under 30 minutes?

Inputs (fill in or confirm):
- Dates and hotel options: [DATES / HOTELS]
- Booked tickets and pickups: [SHOWS, RENTAL CAR TIMES AND PLACES]
- Interests and food budget: [DETAILS]
- Day trips: [PLACES]

Rules:
- Check for big events, festivals and road closures near each booked time and place.
- For each move, compare walking time with ride-hail time including wait and pickup distance.
- Only call a stop "on the way" if it adds under 10 minutes; give the added time.
- Keep evenings loose rather than hour-by-hour.

Checkpoint: Show me the hotel comparison and the booked-time schedule before filling in the rest.

If you get stuck: If you can't confirm an event or a travel time, say so and tell me what to check.

Verify before you finish: Check each stop's location on a map against the route and fix anything out of the way.

Output: A day-by-day plan with booked times, travel options, nearby events and food ideas with prices.

Done when: The plan fits my bookings, has no hidden detours and flags events that could cause delays.

Outcome

Ben Smithson of The Points Guy had never been to Las Vegas and booked a last-minute three-night trip, so Smithson gave ChatGPT the dates, interests, budget and already-booked tickets and let it plan. ChatGPT asked sensible questions, produced an itinerary a Las Vegas expert colleague called "stellar" for a first-timer and offered a map. It compared two Hilton points hotels well, explaining that the Waldorf Astoria has no casino and a quieter vibe, and Smithson chose the Conrad. It also found suitable restaurants with prices and happy hours. But it missed a 60,000-person music festival opening next to the rental car pickup at the same time, which meant crowds, road closures and heavy traffic. It pushed ride-hailing for every trip, including what turned out to be an easy 25-minute walk to a show. And a themed diner it called "en route" back from Valley of Fire was really a 20-minute drive in the opposite direction.

Evidence: Described by posterThe person describes what happened in words, without screenshots or video.

Known limitations

PartialThe source says it only partly worked, or had a significant problem a person had to deal with.

What went wrong: The hotel comparison and dining picks helped, but ChatGPT missed a major festival, pushed ride-hailing for walkable trips and misplaced a lunch stop.

Context: The exact prompts aren't quoted, so the prompt here is recreated. Smithson also found an hour-by-hour plan too rigid for a group weekend in Las Vegas.
