Fix a dishwasher with error codes instead of buying a new one with ChatGPT
Over the holidays, Keith Maly's dishwasher stopped finishing its wash cycle and showed error codes E24, E25 and a water tap warning. Rather than spend $700–$1,300 on a new machine, and with Google results not much help, Maly used ChatGPT to work through diagnostics and troubleshooting. Working through it with ChatGPT, Maly cleaned and replaced the inlet filter, flushed the drain line, replaced the inlet valve and turbidity sensor and then replaced the drain pump, which finally revealed a piece of plastic lodged in the sump. The repair cost $150 in parts and about ten hours over two and a half weeks. Maly also credits a repair site's how-to videos and says asking ChatGPT hypothetical questions helped when it kept repeating the same answers.

Mohan Natarajan's Samsung front-load washer, almost 10 years old and out of warranty, started leaving foam on the clothes and not draining. A service visit would probably have cost at least ₹1,000. ChatGPT listed likely causes and walked Natarajan through opening the drain filter, warning that water might spill out and not to force anything out unless it was clearly foreign. The filter was full of 'dirt, lint, sand, and hair'. After cleaning it, 'The machine worked perfectly.' Natarajan adds a limit: no AI help for repairing electrical systems.

When a tenant reported that the washing machine at a rental property wasn't spinning, self-described not-handy landlord Sam Guertler asked ChatGPT. It laid out a few possible causes and a step-by-step checklist in one response. Following it, and sending photos and observations along the way, Guertler found the suspension rods needed replacing. ChatGPT gave links for replacement parts and how-to videos; Guertler ordered the parts, replaced them and used ChatGPT to check the work. The tenant later texted that the washer was 'purring like a kitten'. A traditional search, tried for comparison, led to a fix that wasn't the issue.

Michaela Holmström bid on a house in Finland built in 1956, and the largest banks hesitated over its original condition. A first, modest plan got a discouraging response. A banker advised raising the budget and describing the workload and materials in great detail, a plan that would normally take Holmström over a week. Holmström uploaded the inspection report to ChatGPT for a summary, gave it the floor plan, materials and room sizes, and had it work out liters of paint from wall area and lengths of water pipe. Holmström cross-checked prices with real merchants and split costs into materials and labor. It still took several hours of Holmström's own work, and not every AI detail was flawless. A loan specialist at a major Nordic bank said it was the most thorough renovation plan the specialist had ever reviewed.

Arol Wright's Chrome search engine kept switching back to an unfamiliar one, new tabs opened pages Wright hadn't chosen and some searches went through redirects. Removing the obvious extension and resetting the search engine didn't hold. Wright described the symptoms to ChatGPT, which walked through the extensions page in Developer mode, then chrome://policy (the most useful step, since forced policies explained why removed items came back), then the Windows registry location for Chrome policies, Task Scheduler and installed programs, and warned to back up registry keys first. Wright pasted what each step showed and ChatGPT helped decide what didn't belong. After removing the rogue policy entries, a scheduled task, the unwanted program and the extensions, then resetting Chrome, the symptoms didn't return. The exchange took about five minutes.

David Gewirtz's PC had games crashing, Windows Update failing and a RAM error. Writing for ZDNET, Gewirtz talked it through with ChatGPT by voice on a phone, sending photos of BIOS screens and memory error dumps. ChatGPT walked through resetting the BIOS to defaults, clearing CMOS via the CLRTC pins and turning off overclocking (running the memory at 2,133 MHz), checked voltages, and advised against reflashing the BIOS. MemTest86 found errors on both 16GB sticks, so Gewirtz replaced the RAM (a Timetec 32GB kit for $190; the G.SKILL kit had cost $75 in 2023 and is $265 now), and MemTest86 then passed. DISM still failed at 28.1% and SFC didn't fix it, so ChatGPT suggested Windows' "Fix problems using Windows Update" reinstall, which took about 90 minutes and kept apps and files. Afterwards DISM completed, SFC found nothing, and updates and games worked. Gewirtz says it "may have saved me a few hundred bucks and many hours" and could have been done alone, but messier.

Austin Wilson spent about 2 hours one week fixing appliances with ChatGPT. For a dishwasher that wasn't cleaning well, Wilson gave ChatGPT a few photos; it pulled the model number, read the manual and reviews, and suggested a fix in under 30 seconds. For an oven that wasn't heating properly, Wilson described the problem by voice and ChatGPT recommended getting a multimeter, which let Wilson pin down the problem. The oven still needs a technician to install the new part.

joenot443 was quoted $6k to fix their pool's plumbing and rebuilt it themselves over a few days with YouTube and GPT, for about $1k of materials. It was their first outdoor plumbing job and they'd never touched PVC. They say they wouldn't have had the confidence from YouTube alone: specific diagnostic help and a full diagram made the difference, and they had it prepare an SVG of the whole assembly with every measurement and part labelled.

Jeffrey Trull had two quotes for a driveway extension and retaining wall worth a few thousand dollars, from contractors they'd never used. One was $500 cheaper. They fed both into ChatGPT, which took 5 minutes. It flagged that the cheaper quote didn't mention drainage or backfill, and explained that water building up behind a retaining wall can make it fail; the dearer quote included a full drainage system with stone backfill. It also set out the trade-off between the nicer interlocking blocks and basic cement blocks, and wrote follow-up questions for each contractor, since one quote gave no wall dimensions and the other didn't explain ground prep. Trull planned to take those questions back to both contractors, and to ask the cheaper one to add drainage and backfill, before signing anything.

After three days lost in Pinterest boards, Tom's Guide's Kaycee Hill uploaded an unedited photo of an empty living-room corner to ChatGPT and described the chair, side table, bookcase and lamp they wanted. They then resized, removed and recoloured pieces in the generated images to test risky choices, and say they finished with a visual blueprint of what sizes to measure for and colours to buy, saving hundreds in potential returns.

A hired contractor couldn't work out how to remove the poster's grandparents' 1980s dishwasher, which was attached at the top. Hacker News user MattGaiser gave ChatGPT the model number; it explained why it wouldn't come out (a part had to be disconnected), found a replacement part and gave step-by-step instructions for taking that part out. They didn't end up buying the new part.

With no building experience, Simone Solazzo and Anne Leijdekkers built a tiny home in the Netherlands over five months in 2025, asking ChatGPT questions constantly. It helped them think through deviations from the plan, do sums and measurements, work out quantities and buying order for around 250 items, and split costs between them. But they often doubted its guidance, and an architect friend showed its answers were frequently wrong; sometimes it stated false things when it didn't know. They relied on the friend and family for ventilation, insulation, electricity and water.

A poster described their broken washing machine to Gemini, which helped them run diagnostics, found it wasn't taking in water and pointed to the inlet valve. They used ChatGPT's shopping help to find and order the part, but the first part didn't fit even though ChatGPT said it would. They installed the right one with Gemini's guidance in about 1.5 hours total, saving about $120 on labour.

When a dryer took three hours to dry a load (normally 45 minutes), Lisa-Anne Chung showed ChatGPT the model number, the parts that weren't working and the pipes at the back over a video chat. It identified the model from a photo, walked Chung through checks such as whether the burner glowed and listening for clicks, gave a shortlist of likely causes, and suggested Sunnyvale repair companies via Yelp with a fair diagnostic fee. Chung says they had a solid hypothesis in about 10 minutes and could talk knowledgeably when they called a repair company.

Tom's Guide's Kaycee Hill asked ChatGPT for a complete spring-cleaning checklist for a one-bedroom apartment and got room-by-room sections including easy-to-miss tasks. They then asked it to split the plan into 5 days with 1 hour of cleaning per day; it saved heavier jobs like deep-cleaning the bathroom for the weekend and put quick wins on weekdays. They say they followed the plan and, for once, finished.

When a dishwasher leak came through their basement ceiling, a homeowner shared photos with ChatGPT and, over a few back-and-forths, narrowed it to a busted drain hose and a worn insulation piece. It found the right parts for their model with a purchase link and walked them through the fix. On the next cycle another puddle appeared because they hadn't clamped the hose far enough, and they called a professional; they say AI got them '99% there'.

A landlord whose tenant reported the AC wasn't cooling couldn't get a callback from their HVAC company, so they photographed the outdoor compressor panel and used ChatGPT. They say it walked them through what to check using the diagnostic codes they saw and through replacing a $25 capacitor; the service call alone would have cost almost 4x that.
