Cut four monthly bills by $119.75 with ChatGPT negotiation scripts
McKenzie Day dreaded calling service providers, so Day asked ChatGPT for a strategy for each bill, how to reach a real person fast and a script for negotiating, including what to say if the first offer wasn't good enough. Taking one bill a week, Day got home internet down from $109 to $50 a month (with more data, Peacock streaming and the rate locked for 5 years), switched phone providers to go from $48 to $15 a month for the first year ($30 after that), moved pest control to a DIY approach ($48 to $11 a month) and swapped a budgeting app for a self-hosted Actual Budget ($9 to $3 a month). In about a month that came to $119.75 a month, or $1,437 a year.

For each call, ChatGPT wrote a 60-second script plus three fallback lines. Spectrum dropped the internet bill from $94.99 to $59.99 a month for 12 months, and AT&T moved two lines from $165 to $110 a month after a second call to the retention department. Geico didn't budge, and ChatGPT's estimate that the car insurance could drop to $140 a month was too optimistic. A gym credited three free months and an unused Disney+ was canceled. Total savings: $113.99 a month, or $1,367.88 a year, for 2 hours and 41 minutes of calls.

Therese M., a retiree who isn't a financial professional, uses ChatGPT between appointments with a financial planner, not instead of them. Therese asks it to 'explain these concepts to me like I'm in fifth grade'. Before meetings with an accountant or certified financial planner, Therese says what the meeting should achieve and asks ChatGPT for targeted questions. When Therese was thinking about redoing a bathroom, ChatGPT ran the numbers and the pros and cons, and Therese decided to just fix the leaky faucet. One firm rule: no real account numbers, Social Security number or identifying details go into the chat.

Myra Donohue, 28, an HR administrator in Grass Valley, California, had US$5,000 of credit card debt plus car payments and other bills, and a partner who had just been laid off. A Facebook post about fixing your finances in seven steps said to start with a zero-based budget, where every dollar gets a job. Donohue plugged the household numbers into ChatGPT and asked for a personalized plan instead of paying for one. 'It was really about me getting back on the horse,' Donohue said. The same New York Times report warns that AI money advice can be wrong, and advisers say to double-check it.

Realtor and content creator Jennifer Allan asked ChatGPT every day for one task to make money toward $23,000 of credit card debt. Over a month, Allan says, the challenge brought in over $11,000 and paid off $12,078.93. Some ideas were quirky: Allan wrote '$23,000' on a watermelon as 'debt art' and auctioned a photo of it for $51. Others paid off: an idea to search phone apps for forgotten money turned up $100.80 on Venmo, and Allan's husband remembered a brokerage account holding $10,200. Credit counselor Noelle Carter warns that AI can help with ideas but is no substitute for human expertise.

When Andrew Wilkinson's New York building emailed a 9% rent increase at lease renewal, Wilkinson asked ChatGPT to pull current listings for comparable units in the building and within 5 blocks, with asking rents, time on the market and concessions, then draft a polite reply backed by those comps. It returned a table and a draft. Wilkinson checked the listings personally, fixed a few things and sent it. The increase came down to 1.2%.

Mr Jasper's spouse needed a Tax ID, and the agent they contacted quoted 10k and asked for the spouse's NIN to process it the next day. Mr Jasper asked ChatGPT about it and how long it takes, and found it was something they could do themselves in a few minutes. Natasha Hsi got five homeowner's insurance quotes for a complicated house. They differed on exclusions, wind and named-storm deductibles, and admitted versus surplus-lines insurers, and Hsi found them hard to follow. They fed all five plus their current renewal into ChatGPT and Claude and ran scenarios such as a hurricane loss and a total loss. When Hsi suggested starting with BBB ratings, both pushed back: BBB tracks complaints, while financial strength ratings show whether an insurer can pay after a storm. Hsi took the questions back to their original agent, who returned a better-structured quote at a more reasonable cost with none of the weakly rated insurers.

Finance writer Jessie Hewitson tested ChatGPT on household bills. It had Hewitson find a cheaper competing broadband deal (£23 a month with Virgin against £35 with Vodafone) and wrote a script; read word for word on the phone, it got Vodafone to offer a £22-a-month reduction, which Hewitson says saved £156 a year. An emailed tariff review with Octopus turned into a phone call that moved them to tariffs worth an estimated £626 a year. Not everything worked: a ChatGPT-written appeal against a £90 Transport for London penalty failed, and a home-insurance quote it led to came in at £1,627.24 against £436 before.

Facing a draft 2025 tax return saying they owed $117,360 more, a poster asked ChatGPT (the Astra model) to do a secondary review, tying every number to source documents in their email and files. It ran for 90 minutes and produced a 15-page report saying they were due a $191,173 refund; they say their accountant reviewed it line by line and agreed. They add that the AI couldn't have done the return from scratch and they still need their accountant.

A filer in India used ChatGPT, with documents in a Project, as their main assistant for their income tax return. They say it was good at flagging common pitfalls and asking for supporting documents, and most valuable for checking calculations across documents. But it gave confident wrong guidance on REIT dividends and sales, misclassified some short- and long-term capital gains even with broker reports, and sometimes got totals wrong; they had to verify every important number. They'd still use it next year.
