Make sense of dealership lease printouts mid-visit with ChatGPT
A first-time car shopper who found the dealer's math confusing asked for a minute alone, took screenshots of the printouts, gave ChatGPT some context and asked how to negotiate and which options were right for their family. They say it explained the pros and cons clearly and told them what to negotiate; they followed about 90% of its advice, said 'no' about 4 times to 'meet in the middle' offers, and leased the car on their terms.

On a dark, rainy drive, TechRadar's Graham Barlow's second-hand car would only crawl and the dash showed '19 mph limit'. They photographed the dashboard and asked ChatGPT; it said a speed limiter was switched on at 19 mph and was probably controlled by a button on a stalk behind the wheel. They found the button labelled 'Limit', turned it off and drove on without calling roadside recovery.

After leaving the driver's window about 1/4" open for roughly 36 hours, a poster's car wouldn't start and they jump-started it with a portable charger; the service manual pointed them to the dealer. The poster says Grok quickly found there's a dash service code for the driver window and the fix was to roll the window down and back up, which cleared the code and saved a dealer trip.

The dealership resisted, but within two weeks the poster got a brand-new replacement, with the leather seats swapped over.

After independent garages kept resetting the engine management light and a main dealer quoted £2,500 for a new catalytic converter, Paul Ryan bought a £20 OBD reader, downloaded the data and uploaded it to Grok. Grok said it was the post-cat oxygen sensor, not the converter. A mechanic agreed to replace just the sensor (£100 part, £100 labour) once Ryan signed that it might not fix it. The light stayed off and the sensors read normal; Ryan says it saved £2,000.

After a dealer charged $7,000 for a new catalytic converter and the GMC diesel still went into limp mode while towing an Airstream, Greg Wall spent six weeks talking to Grok and watching YouTube. Grok helped find part numbers, estimate costs and rate the difficulty of each job; Wall replaced the #2 exhaust gas temperature sensor, alternator, #9 fuel injector, intercooler pipe and air intake box, filter and pipe, but couldn't loosen the NOx sensor nut. The couple bought a new truck anyway; on a later 2-hour drive the diesel showed no warnings and set a 21.2 mpg record.

When their car wouldn't start, a poster sent Gemini a photo of a loose hose under the hood. It identified the air intake; they reattached it but the car still wouldn't start, and from the symptoms Gemini said the engine was likely flooded and explained how to clear it (gas pedal down, turn the key). The engine started, saving them a tow; they still booked a professional check.

When their car warranty expired, a driver was quoted $22,600 by the dealership for a five-year, 60,000-mile extension. They say ChatGPT told them that was far too high; the dealer dropped the same warranty to $11,800 within five minutes. Still told it was too much, they called another dealership and were offered $7,400 for seven years and 90,000 miles.

Four weeks after buying a used car that kept developing problems, even after a warranty repair, a UK buyer thought they were stuck: the dealer's 30-day return only covered up to 250 miles and they'd done about 500. ChatGPT told them about their rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, and they say one email later the dealer agreed to take the car back with a full refund.

When a 2018 Chevy Volt had a problem, James Benson described it to Grok on the spot. Grok said the battery energy control module (BECM) needed replacing, that it was under extended warranty, and how to temporarily get home. The dealership initially said Grok was wrong, but after diagnosing the car found it was the BECM and covered by warranty.

Hunting for a mid-size SUV in India, Android Police's Parth Shah put long reviews and hours-long YouTube comparisons into a NotebookLM notebook and asked questions such as rear-seat comfort, service costs and A/C performance, with links back to each source. After settling on a car, Shah uploaded insurers' policy brochures and asked about accidental-damage exclusions, cancellation fees, cashless claims at service centers in Surat and natural-disaster cover, and says NotebookLM pulled out the exact clauses.

With no pre-tow photo and a dent left by a tow truck driver hired by their apartment, a poster asked ChatGPT o3 and Gemini 2.5 Flash whether to claim on insurance or leave it. Both suggested settling directly with the driver, who also lacked a pre-tow photo. Over five weeks, with o3's guidance, they built an email trail, set deadlines and asked for evidence, and say they won a $2100 settlement in 35 days.

AutoZone's free test showed the battery was dead; they swapped it and the truck started, saving about $1,000 in shop or towing fees by their estimate.

Cord Silverstein uploaded a dealer's $4,288 estimate for a 2019 Honda Pilot, including a vague photo labelled 'leaking tensioner', and asked ChatGPT to act as a mechanic. It said the coolant flush was legitimate, to ask for photo proof of the timing belt and tensioner leak, that the shock absorbers looked like an upsell because the photo showed a new part, and that alignment was only needed if the shocks were bad. It also explained Honda's service intervals and drafted a polite pushback email.

The article cautions that chatbots can miss steps and this won't work for everyone.

SlashGear describes YouTuber Watch Wes Work asking ChatGPT about three codes (P0171, P0420, P1101) on a 2015 Chevrolet Trax. ChatGPT suggested checking for exhaust leaks, then inspecting the mass airflow sensor and air intake, and gave theoretically accurate test methods, but its normal airflow reading was vague. The YouTuber found vacuum leaks in a PCV hose and the valve cover and, asked whether ChatGPT diagnosed the issue, said it's a matter of perspective, but ultimately it did not; SlashGear says it lacked hands-on context for this model.
