Before you start, ask me 1–3 short questions about the details below and wait for my answers. Once I've answered, confirm the plan in one line and run the whole task start to finish. Goal: Turn a month of raw bank transactions into a budget-vs-actual view and catch anything odd. Questions to ask me first: - Which months and accounts are in the export? - What are your budget categories and the monthly amount for each? - Is there anything that should always go in a certain category? Inputs (fill in or confirm): - Bank export (dates, descriptions, amounts): [TRANSACTIONS] - Budget categories and amounts: [CATEGORIES / BUDGET] - Known rules (e.g., Venmo rent goes to housing): [RULES] Rules: - Put each transaction in one category, treat returns as refunds, and use 'Other' rather than guessing. - Build a summary with spending per category, budget, difference and over-budget items highlighted. - Flag possible duplicate charges, unusual patterns and whether the data covers the whole month. - Give a small budget to 'Other' so it isn't always shown as over budget. Checkpoint: Show me the transactions you put in 'Other' and ask me where they belong before building the summary. If you get stuck: If a description is unreadable, list it separately with the date and amount so I can look it up. Verify before you finish: Check that category totals add up to total spending and that the date range is stated. Output: A categorized transaction list, a budget-vs-actual summary and a short list of flagged items. Done when: Every transaction has a category and I know which ones to double-check.

Outcome
Haroun Adamu gave Gemini in Google Sheets a sample bank export of 42 October transactions with raw entries like 'POS DEBIT KROGER #6948' and asked it to sort them into 10 existing categories. It placed most correctly, put hard ones like an Amazon purchase and a Venmo payment in 'Other' and treated a Target return as a refund. A new tab compared spending to budget and highlighted overages in red: $3,440.84 spent against a $2,830 budget, with groceries $177.36 over and household spending at more than double its $90 budget. Asked about unusual transactions, Gemini flagged two identical $24.99 Planet Fitness charges four days apart as a possible duplicate, noted four different grocery stores in 72 hours and pointed out that the data only ran through October 22, with more than a week of the month left.

Context: Adamu tested a sample bank export, not real accounts. Gemini in Sheets is a paid feature at about $20 a month, and an unbudgeted 'Other' category always shows as over budget.

Track every K-1 and 1099 and prep for a CPA with a Claude Cowork project
Brett Chereskin, whose finances had grown to multiple brokerage accounts, K-1 investments and an Opportunity Zone investment, set up a dedicated Project in Claude's Cowork mode as a tax and financial planning resource and fed it documents. Claude read a hundred-page brokerage statement and built a tracking list of every outstanding K-1 and 1099 in two minutes, caught a deferred gain on the Opportunity Zone investment that triggers a significant tax event at the end of 2026, which Chereskin had missed, mapped out quarterly estimated payments, and drafted emails to the CPA and financial advisor. Chereskin sent the CPA an organized package instead of a pile of PDFs, and before a doctor's visit used Claude to turn lab-result trends into questions, not to self-diagnose.

McKenzie Day dreaded calling service providers, so Day asked ChatGPT for a strategy for each bill, how to reach a real person fast and a script for negotiating, including what to say if the first offer wasn't good enough. Taking one bill a week, Day got home internet down from $109 to $50 a month (with more data, Peacock streaming and the rate locked for 5 years), switched phone providers to go from $48 to $15 a month for the first year ($30 after that), moved pest control to a DIY approach ($48 to $11 a month) and swapped a budgeting app for a self-hosted Actual Budget ($9 to $3 a month). In about a month that came to $119.75 a month, or $1,437 a year.

Allison, a 34-year-old paralegal paying about $612 a month across bills, tested ChatGPT bill negotiation for 30 days with Jake Read. For each call, ChatGPT wrote a 60-second script plus three fallback lines. Spectrum dropped the internet bill from $94.99 to $59.99 a month for 12 months, and AT&T moved two lines from $165 to $110 a month after a second call to the retention department. Geico didn't budge, and ChatGPT's estimate that the car insurance could drop to $140 a month was too optimistic. A gym credited three free months and an unused Disney+ was canceled. Total savings: $113.99 a month, or $1,367.88 a year, for 2 hours and 41 minutes of calls.

Therese M., a retiree who isn't a financial professional, uses ChatGPT between appointments with a financial planner, not instead of them. Therese asks it to 'explain these concepts to me like I'm in fifth grade'. Before meetings with an accountant or certified financial planner, Therese says what the meeting should achieve and asks ChatGPT for targeted questions. When Therese was thinking about redoing a bathroom, ChatGPT ran the numbers and the pros and cons, and Therese decided to just fix the leaky faucet. One firm rule: no real account numbers, Social Security number or identifying details go into the chat.

Myra Donohue, 28, an HR administrator in Grass Valley, California, had US$5,000 of credit card debt plus car payments and other bills, and a partner who had just been laid off. A Facebook post about fixing your finances in seven steps said to start with a zero-based budget, where every dollar gets a job. Donohue plugged the household numbers into ChatGPT and asked for a personalized plan instead of paying for one. 'It was really about me getting back on the horse,' Donohue said. Realtor and content creator Jennifer Allan asked ChatGPT every day for one task to make money toward $23,000 of credit card debt. Over a month, Allan says, the challenge brought in over $11,000 and paid off $12,078.93. Some ideas were quirky: Allan wrote '$23,000' on a watermelon as 'debt art' and auctioned a photo of it for $51. Others paid off: an idea to search phone apps for forgotten money turned up $100.80 on Venmo, and Allan's husband remembered a brokerage account holding $10,200. Credit counselor Noelle Carter warns that AI can help with ideas but is no substitute for human expertise.

Build a third-grade ancient cultures unit and parent newsletter with Gemini
Monica H., a third-grade teacher in Minnesota with 32 years in the classroom, started using Gemini after a Google course for educators. Gemini adjusted the reading level of pasted texts to third- or fifth-grade level, turned a back-to-school parent newsletter 'more exciting' and readable enough for the kids, and wrote comprehension questions for class stories once the request named the type ('comprehension questions based on sequence'). For the state standard on ancient cultures, Monica used the Minnesota standard to have Gemini draft a unit plan and handouts about life in ancient China or Egypt, refined with keywords like 'pyramids' or 'calligraphy,' which Monica said saved countless hours. Gemini also wrote short informational and literary paragraphs for a classroom gallery walk.

Hybanth Reddy Ch's dog, Tillu, swallowed a sewing needle. The vet hospital the family went to recommended open surgery because none of its branches had endoscopy equipment, and online searches kept turning up clinics without it. About 20 minutes before the operation, Reddy typed a simple prompt into Gemini, written out of sheer disbelief: 'there is no endoscopy for dogs in Hyderabad.' Gemini's top result was a hospital in Jubilee Hills. A phone call confirmed it could do the procedure that day, the needle was removed by endoscopy within an hour, and Tillu went home the same day.

Amanda Caswell, a mom of three writing for Tom's Guide, kept buying food the family already had. Caswell photographed the fridge, freezer and pantry, uploaded the photos to Gemini (using the Nano Banana 2 image model) and asked for meals made from what was there, plus the cheapest items to buy. Gemini spotted lean ground sirloin, frozen broccoli, chicken, black beans and spaghetti, and built a 4-day plan: beef and bean pasta, a cheesy chicken and broccoli bake, an everything frittata and burrito bowls. Caswell estimates about $150 in savings compared with a usual weekly spend.
